Water without harvesting
So I'm trying to nurture a giant cauliflower right now by letting a big grid of them sit for longer, but I have not been able to figure out how to water all of them without picking up the cauliflower nearest me. As a result, I end up having to water 1 square away from my patch and it's a hassle to get it all done in this roundabout way. Both left-click and right-click seem to pick up plants. Am I just missing something?

I don't think that's how it works. When the crops hit maturity, there's a chance that a 3x3 grid will be replaced with a giant crop. If you don't get a giant crop, then you're not going to get one simply by leaving the mature crops in the ground and waiting for them to merge.

And I'm fairly certain it's absolutely required to plant the crops in the grid at the same time, keeping them always in the same stage of growth.

Yeah that is true

I was trying to get a giant pumpkin and I wound up jusst using the spread of my upgraded can to water them from a distance so I wouldn't harvest them.

Yeah, hold down left mouse on a gold watering can should give you a 3x3 grid to water all at once.

Initially I wasn't going to try the let-it-sit idea either, but it was a tip from a Giant Crop tutorial on YouTube so I was just experimenting. I think I may have even heard it mentioned on multiple videos but can't remember now.

Even if it did work, the only real benefit to waiting for a giant crop would be that you saved yourself from buying 9 seeds. Given that the best way to make money is to invest money, having to wait longer to sell something is not going to do any player any favors.

The way giant crops work is very simple.
Each 3X3 grid of fully mature (harvest ready) plants which are watered have a chance to fuse into a giant crop.
If you don't have an upgraded watering can, one trick is to aim your character towards the spot you want to water and click after or before the harvest ready crop.
Once a giant crop is realized and or there is no 3x3 potential...stop watering those. Only water the potential (min 3X3) harvest ready crops.
Having a steel watering can is extremely helpful unless you have grid greater than 10 x 10; 100 crops.

"Each day when these crops are in full-grown state and watered, they have a chance to combine themselves with other 8 surrounding same type crops and turn into Giant Crops."
Says the WIki.. Could be wrong though

Pressing C makes your character water the crop you are directly facing

That's what the Wiki says. From my experience the giant crops only appear on the day/night of maturity. Maybe your best chance is the day of maturity and a lesser chance once matured. Or it could just be my RNG. Either way the above posters have it right - upgrade your watering can so you have a AOE.

Although if you do cut down the giant crop with an axe you get more than 9 produce - its not all about money and if you like them, you keep them :)

Finally a real solution that respects the question. Thank you so much!

wierd necro and response, makes me assume the participants are in a black hole. experiencing time much more slowly than normal.

the reasonable ways to do it is to use upgraded irridium sprinklers. which have a 7x7 tile range with the sprinkler in the center.

wrong.
you can still get giant crops by watering the fully mature crops.
if you have a 3x3 crops, you only need to water the middle one.

if you already upgrade your watering can. and playing with mouse & keyboard.
you can hold down the left click (watering button) and charge the can.
with this, your character won't harvest the crops

if giant potential crops mature and there is like 2 or 3 days left in the season, i water them and let them sit and harvest on the final day of the season. sometimes i get extra giant crops due to that extra day or 2 that i could not use for crops anyway.
Snowy Sprout Oct 16, 2023 @ 11:34pm
You could use rain totems to keep them watered if you want. It's viable if you're at that stage of the game and don't want to interrupt the potential Giant Spawning Area with sprinklers.
