Fishing Tips - Beginner and Advanced **MILD SPOILERS!**
Want to make your (fishing) life easier? Look no further than this brief post with a few tips and tricks to make your fishing easier and to catch the rarest, most difficult fish!

The most obvious tip is to upgrade your fishing skill ASAP so you can purchase the Iridium Rod. This will allow you to use both bait and tackle. I recommend always baiting your rod because it will help you catch a LOT more fish and faster than without bait.

The tackle that works best for catching the rare/legendary/pain in the butt fish is the Trap Bobber. When a fish is off your fishing bar, he will get away significantly more slowly!

Whenever you can afford to do it and it's worth doing (especially in the end game), eat a Fish Stew or Trout Soup before fishing. They will grant you +3 and +1, respectively, to your Fishing skill. It'll last for a few minutes of real time and give you an edge to catch those pesky legendary fish.

The further you cast from any land or walkable area (deeper out into the ocean or closer to the center of a lake), the more likely you are to get the rare fish and silver-star and gold-star versions of the fish you are trying to catch. Always cast the farthest out you can unless it's going to get you close to another piece of land, a bridge, etc. This will maximize your effort and time to get the most money and value.

For any fish that is not terribly difficult (those than can only jerk up or down less than half the size of your fishing bar), you will want to keep the fish in the center of your bar at all times. This is common sense but I posted it anyway, because...

For any fish that is more difficult (and can jerk up or down MORE than half the size of your fishing bar), you will want to keep the fish at the edge of your fishing bar. This is because if you keep him in the middle of your bar, he will always jerk far enough to start getting away; however, at the end of your bar, you have a 50/50 chance that he will jerk but stay on the bar (giving you time to adjust) or BARELY getting off the edge (also buying you time).

Using the second method, if the fish is within one fishing bar length from the top or bottom, keep your fishing bar on the opposite side of the fish. If the fish moves to the very end of the bar, it's far easier to adjust your position than if you hold against the bottom or top and he jerks too far away.

Obviously, practice makes perfect (and so does Fish Stew!) and you'll need to keep fishing until you get better at it. Even in the beginning, though, with just a baited hook and good skill you can make 2,000 to 5,000 gold per day purely by fishing and selling all the fish. If you get low on energy, just eat one or two of the cheapest fish and catch a few more!

Happy fishing!

Why not make a fishing guide while you're at it?
Because I'm lazy and those tips are 90% of what people need to do. The other 10% is practice, practice, swear at your computer, and practice.

Good point.

Oh, I added one more thing. I forgot to mention to cast as far away from land as possible to get the gold-starred fish and rarest fish.

Other than making a list of all the fish and where/when to find them (which others have done) I think this is about it. I also don't know of anyone else posting the tips on bar location that I've found through experience. :3

I see.
Well, other than that, this thread will be useful for beginners, that's for sure.
I have to get and cook one final recipe (I somehow missed it in a previous year) and find one final artifact and I've 100% the entire game. Everyone at max hearts, all fish caught, everything shipped, all minerals collected, all other achievements unlocked (except one), and I'll just be making my millions of gold each month with my diamond mine. :p

Also here is a Fishing Infograph for people to use to find locations for all the fish without having to use the wiki and also shows what bundles need which fish, too: http://imgur.com/a/iPPXN
