What is Pierre's problem?
Note, that this is going to be sort of a rant about the character, Pierre, but it's fueled by my honest opinion rather then hatred for losing, as i'll get to later.
I'll try to keep it short.

Also, strong language warning.

-----------------
I've been playing this game for a few days now and have enjoyed almost everything about it.
The townsfolk are veried and interesting in their own ways and have had alot of fun interacting with all of them.

That is, except for one. That one, is Pierre. Arguably a 'main', character, being one of the first you're likely introduced to and one of the most common for even anti-social players such as myself, to interact with for his stock.

Unfortunately, i don't know if it was intentional or not, but why is Pierre.. pardon my french, but such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bag?

Literally, every bit of dialogue, (especially during events.) apart from his generic greeting upon entering his store makes him out to be a harshe, egotistical, unlikeable ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who cares more about himself then anyone in the entire valley.

At first, i was somewhat sympathetic for him, losing his 'loyal' customers to Joja mart, but after nearing year 4, i'm starting to wonder if they left for a different cause.

As i mentioned, Pierre is generally, quite a harsh person, more interested in himself then anyone else, going by the things he says and does during events.

The thing that made me really decide to speak up about my disliking for this particular character, was a particular bit of dialogue that, well, has driven me from even interacting with him, and since i now have seed makers, i likely will never interact with him again to even buy seeds.(apart from maybe rare occasions.)

I went to the Stardew Valley Fair event, after skipping it the first two years, wanting to get good stuff for it, so i did. I got second place behind Pierre, with a score of 82.

I was fine with this, really, untill i talked to him, and what he said genuinely disgusted me.

The little git gloated about how he won, that his produce was the best, or something along those lines, i genuinely wanted to skip his dialogue after reading it from his attitude alone, so i don't really remember right now.

He then made a remark that after his gloating, i feel was more of a passing shot at my character, something along the lines of "Your things were good too."

Now, i'm sorry but, genuinely... is it the dev's intention, to make him unlikeable?
To the point of making him such an egotistical, self-indulgent, uncaring person?

I only have three bundles remaining until the Community Center is complete,(all of which only require one more item.) and even so, if one of the 'perks' of instead joining Joja Co. was running Pierre out of business, i really would honestly take it.

I'm a very patient, understanding person, and it takes alot to genuinely make me dislike somebody, but this ♥♥♥♥, has not only managed to clear the bar, but is currently nearing low-orbit at this point.

So i ask, what, is Pierre's problem?
I thought, from the near-start of the game that i was supposed to have sympathy for him, but that wanes quickly when said character does nothing but give the player more and more reasons to hate them.

-----------------
I've ranted for long enough, and i really don't know if this is going to get looked at, let alone listened to by the devs, or i'll just be classified as a troll/hater for my negative opinion(People have been considered as such for simply asking basic questions before..), but this has been my honest opinion and frustration with the character.

If it was the intention to make him so unlikeable in some player's eyes that they -genuinely- refuse to do business with him once they have alternative means of functioning, then you did a very(almost unfortunately) good job of it.

If not, maybe this could be adressed in a future update or something, a tweak to his dialogue to make him less... well, ♥♥♥♥ing despicable, really.

EDIT: After posting, i realized how particularly hostile this was.
It was meerly me expressing my disdain for a character i've seen no good from, but after focusing on other things for about an hour, my mind was more clear and i've decided, i'm going to try and see if he's atleast a decent person once you get to know him.

I more then understand the stress he's under, though i don't see why it would give him justification to gloat over winning and be so cruel.
I don't know how long it will take, but i will try again, at seeing him in a different light.

That was one really long rant about a fictional character

I made kind of a joke about that fact with my friends, honestly.

Short answer: No. Given that even the most initially cold, hard-hearted villagers ended up having gilt edges, it's hard to imagine ConcernedApe would make the local shop-owner the "irredeemable villain" of the game.

You're not the only forum-goer who dislikes Pierre. As with any fictional character, Pierre reflects the reader's own projections and conscious or subliminal biases.

As a small business owner myself, I can understand the stress he's under that might make things he says come off as "harsh" or unfriendly (although I don't agree that he should give that impression, even unintentionally!)

He's proudly running a small, independent grocery store with what must be razor-thin profit margins, a soulless mega-corporation is shamelessly trying to drive him out of business (which would make him unable to care for his family) and he has to balance his store management with trying to attend to his familial responsibilities on top of all that. Dude has a lot of shhh...tuff on his shoulders. ;)

Want my point of view? I think Pierre wins the faire event because his stuff is good and he knows it is, compared to Jojamart. Consider it TLC, savvy business practice, or a green thumb (perhaps all three), I think if I were he, I'd be proud of my work, also. Joja, on the other hand, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the corporation has very bad practices in place, such as sweatshop labor, unfair employee treatment, and probably all sorts of problems (i.e, maybe Jojacrops have carcinogens or pathogens in it; stuff that costs 5g to produce in dangerous and unsafe conditions, and then is marked up to sell for hundreds if not thousands in profit). I don't think the Joja cashier is even allowed to go home and sleep, either, she's always got circles under her eyes and she probably naps while standing up while that SOB behind the counter deducts 100% of her pay so she can breathe filtered store air and he charges an additional 5 gp for her apron.

I think Pierre's ok. At least he says, "It's Farmer <name>!" from time to time. At least he acknowledges you.

Really, when was the last time or if ever if you tried giving the Jojamart Guy a gift? At least Pierre has a birthday. I'm thinking JojaGuy is a Synth, really.

You should be able to open your own shop and outcompete Pierre 'u'

I've never really encountered anyone I hate, but in regards to Pierre, there is the possibility that he is a major jerk.

After all why the hell would Pierre say "How'd you get back here?" angrily at the Easter Event, you know despite the fact that eggs are found BACK there during the egg hunt. Screw off Pierre.

I feel the same way whenever Maru demeans my farming by calling it easy. ♥♥♥♥♥, I'm a millionaire. You enjoy working for pennies at a clinic with no patients? That's what I thought.

As for Pierre. I think he's a giant tool bag, but deep down I think he's a decent enough guy. When you compare him to Morris he's definitely the lesser of the two. Also he's kind of my father-in-law. Besides, I'm better than him in every way and I'm so great about it that I don't need to rub it in his big arrogant face.

Well, his wife maybe, his daughter eats rocks anyway, so he'd still be able to provide for her.

I don't know; caring for a daughter who suffers from Pica Disorder[en.m.wikipedia.org] must add another aspect of stress. ;)

Idk seems like a good guy to me, he just likes to win m8 calm down :p Also he likely feels threatened by Jova hut coming in and taking his customers so he likes to talk big about his shop and his product to the town.

Lol tho
