Beginners fishing help
What's the best place for a beginner fisherman? Any tips/tricks you all have? Just started the game.

A lot of people recommend starting out fishing in the river in town because the fish there are a little easier to catch, I liked the pier just outside Willy's shop, though, until I got enough wood to repair the bridge to the Eastern beach and pier. As for tips, use a controller if you have one, it's easier than using a mouse, fishing synergises well with mining and combat since you can get plenty of bug meat to make bait from between floors 10 and 25 of the mines, and most importantly of all just keep practicing until you get the hang of the minigame and learn how to predict the movement patterns of the fish.

The best place to learn to fish is at the lake near Robin's house (the carpenter), during Spring or Fall. There, you'll find the easiest fish in the game - the Carp. And as you learn to catch the carp, you'll also be learning to catch Chub, Bullhead, and eventually Largemouth Bass - all of which are fairly valuable fish for their difficulty ratings. So just go to the lake, and start fishing. It will take time, but you will gradually get better and better at it. Don't worry if fish get away - just keep at it.

If you have any trouble, just ask here - we've got several ace fishermen here who have nothing better to do except help you :D.

I aim for the rock at the far left of the beach. In town on the far left between the 2 bushes works well too.

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect, but in this case as your Fishing skill gets better the green portion of your bar gets larger, making it easier to keep reeling in the fish. So practice will help you get the hang of it and the skill level going up will also make it easier. Keep an eye out for Dish of the Sea, too, as it will give you a +3 to your fishing skill for a while which makes catching fish easier for the above reason.

The fish store dude sells a stew that will give you a boost. Use it.
Ignore the chests untill you have the best rod.
Make friends with the hobo to learn shashimi.
If a fish has a value of less that 75, turn it into shashimi.
Quite a few people like that dish so use it to make friends and cash.
When you can get them, crab pots will also increase your fishing skill, but slowly.
One of the festivals has a fishing game for 50g. I found that to be a great place to practice, but you dont get xp or fish. instead you earn stars and it uses no stamina.

Why? Can I use the sticks of the controller?

It's just a lot easier for a lot of people to to play the minigame pressing a button on a controller rather than clicking with a mouse, of course there's always going to be an exception to any rule, so if you think you'd find it easier with a mouse then give it a shot.
