If you have an extreme over abundance of it, sure go for it. Otherwise, you can just wear double Burglar Ring's and kill Dust Sprites on floors 41 - 79 for easy coal farming.

I think it's best to make charcoal on an 'as needed' basis. For example I recently made about 50 bee houses and only made charcoal as I needed it because the crafting recipe also calls for 40 wood per bee house.

I just always made 9-10 coal makers, if I need coal its 50G cheaper to buy ten wood from robin over 1 coal from clint.

I think it's better to go farm the little coal monsters in the mines than waste wood. Don't sell your wood, you could be making more stuff with that.

Keep your wood for crafting and buildings. If you specifically need coal, then craft a few but you'll get plenty of coal in the mines. The Dust Sprites(the black balls) in the ice area of the mine are good at dropping coal and you'll get lots of coal if you find a closed backpack or a mine cart.

They're a reward for killing 500 dust sprites from the Adventurer's Guild if you talk to Gil. Once you unlock the ring you can buy another one from Marlon.
