Most people call it the spiritual successor to Harvest Moon on the PC, it's very similar ... but it goes in some different directions. Same sex marriage is an option, for example ... there's a simple combat system with a sort of Zelda-ish control scheme, and there's some more adult themes and jokes in general.

One thing that I'm especially happy about is the addition of meters to be able to tell how full your watering can is and how much energy you have left, and much less emphasis on specific deadlines (you can't miss a super-special item just because you didn't meet X or Y requirement by Winter of Year 1; at most, you just wait for the season to roll around again).

It is very similar. I know this might sound blsphamis to some people but.. I actually like this game more than the Harvest Moon games. So far anyway :P

It is certainly more forgiving than Harvest Moon, but I enjoy it. Granted I am in my first Winter and kinda bored at the moment now though waiting till Spring.

There is plenty of things to do: fishing, farming (main aspect of the game), simple combat (not as detailed as Rune Factory's), socializing (even getting married to someone), quite a lot of collections to get (or accomplish), plenty of achievements to work for (ingame and on Steam), dungeon delving (areas such as the Mines and the Skull Cavern which is an infinite dungeon), cooking various recipes that you learn from NPCs, the ingame TV, etc that can provide various buffs, slime breeding, skills (with various perks at certain skill levels to choose from), the game can be modded to add more things, change the look of things outright, make the game easier/harder, etc, and tons more.

You can take your time to do things and you won't miss anything, at all. So, you don't need to worry about meeting deadlines or have to feel rushed to do so and so (unless you wish to challenge yourself further).

The game also plans on getting multiplayer eventually, so you can enjoy the game with your friends when it does come out: https://twitter.com/ConcernedApe/status/717478327724826624

I bought Stardew Valley and Darksouls 3 together. Same shopping basket, same checkout. A week later, i have 50 hours on stardew valley. And 84 minutes on Dark Souls 3.

And i like dark souls. I have nearly 100 hours on dark souls 2.

But stardew valley is just so addictive. I love open world, play at your own pace games. And this one has lots to do. Im constantly setting goals for myself.

Yes, it's very similar! I've been a fan of the Harvest Moon series since the N64 version and I've probably got around 10 different HM games lying around from over the years. I bought Stardew Valley because of its similarity to Harvest Moon. It reminds me of the classic HM games like Friends of Mineral Town, etc., but it has a lot more options, in my opinion. You can customize your character's look and clothes, marry the same gender, engage in combat with mine monsters, craft useful items, and there's more livestock variety than the early HM games with animals such as rabbits and dinosaurs. Harvest Moon tends to more or less give you linear gameplay--you go from point A to point B, and there's not much wiggle room. Stardew Valley gives you a much longer leash where you can go in pretty much whatever direction you want without feeling like you're following a preestablished path. It's great. My boyfriend says it reminds him of Harvest Moon + Terraria + Minecraft.

I believe Yatzee put it best...

"Stardew Valley is a retro-style farming simulator recently released on Steam that's somewhat reminiscent of Harvest Moon. Oh sorry, I read that wrong. Stardew Valley is Harvest Moon. It murdered Harvest Moon, stole Harvest Moon's skin and befriended Harvest Moon's parents under the guise of consoling them in their hour of grief."

Why bump this thread?

Comparing Stardew Valley to Harvest Moon. I will say Stardew Valley is harder, has more diversity. What Stardew Valley lacks is a good comunity update. As far as gameplay goes SV is the go to game. HM is a good game to wind down with.

That and the helper gnomes in the GBA version I can and have maxed out the income early game. Just by visiting every sprite very early game with gifts accordingly. Then asking the gnomes to do the farm work for me while I drink myself silly with wine.

This game is as good as HM. In some ways it's better, but it's sad that some people seem to be disrepecting HM. If it weren't for HM, there wouldn't be any Stardew Valley yet some comments people make seem to make it sound as if HM is utterly utterly or obselete. HM is still a good series (well mainly the classic games anyway). Even if you love SV and think it's better than HM, at least show it some respect instead of bashing it.
