i reached the bottom of th mines got the skull key... whats it used for?

It unlocks a door outside of town. Thats all I'll say.

This thread is a slow buildup to the actual answer, here's a complete answer.

The skull key is used inside a cave just above the oasis in the desert to gain access to the skull cavern. The skull cavern is an infinite mine that has harder enemies and much more iridum as well as better loot in general.
