Easiest fish to catch?
Hi, I'm level 10 on everything and have nearly $1M gold and have a galaxy sword, etc. etc.

But I am still on level 1 for fishing. I completely suck at it. Ha! It's currently Winter Year 3 and I figured maybe I'll take some time to do some fishing. But I can't seem to keep that bar over the fish nearly long enough. I've caught exactly ONE fish and that was mostly by accident. And although I've finished nearly all of the Fish Tank part of the community center (through the Traveling Cart and other winnings here and there), I think I'll need to finally start fishing in order to complete the community center.

What are the easiest fish to catch in order to get started and get some practice? (I am really good at catching soggy newspapers and Jojo colas. Go me!) And where can I find these fish?

I'm not saying the fishing is too hard or whining at all. I just kept avoiding learning it because I sucked at it and didn't need it yet. But now I do, so I'm going to just suck it up, buttercup, and learn it. Might as well start with easiest fish and best locations in order to get some of those experience points going.

Carp is the easiest.

Would love to know if the traveling cart ever sells chub fish. That's the only one I need for that part of the field research bundle.

I'll work on carp to get started. I hope. :)

I had that page of the wiki open when I wrote. But I've sometimes found the wiki to be a bit *off* in its information. (It's a wiki, after all.) So, I figured I'd also ask here. And I can't find anything on the wiki about whether I could ever encounter a chub for sale on the traveling cart. I thought perhaps someone here had managed to secure one some other way besides fishing.

The sea cucumber, found during Fall and Winter in the ocean, is pretty easy to catch. Iirc it just sits on the bottom most of the time.

You can't be serious. It's patently obvious to anyone watching from the outside that you are an instigator and provocateur. You are never polite. Your comments are always cynical, smarmy and smart ass in nature. Insulting and judgmental. Always. Over and over. You are transparent as glass.

Get over yourself, or learn to be a more subtle troll.

I don't know about "easy" fish but I do know of two fishing spots that almost give constant Gold star rated fish (Wiki doesn't help with this sort of info).
One is the mountian lake. Middle island one the very bottom tip of said island. Cast straight down an out from there. (often catch chub there)

Other at ocean after bridge has been repaired. Go between the two pools above the 2nd dock, walk down to the ocean and cast out.

Dunno about the river yet but most of the fish are pretty easy if you feather the left button. If the bar wigs out then till you get the rythem down I surgest to just shrug and try again.

Hope this info is helpful

I find the easist fish to catch is the carp - and the best place for this is in the little lake in the secret woods. The other good place for carp are in the mountain lake (where there is also a chance for chub), off the bottom of the island in the middle.

Iaenij is correct - the secret woods pond is the best place to find carp.

Using your crab pots also increases your fishing skill as fish caught in them counts towards the amount needed for each skill level increase.

It is also worth checking the ♥♥♥♥♥ cart every Fri and Sun, also Krobus on a Wed once you've access to the sewers. Both have a variety of fish which can assist you in completing bundles and quests.

I personally find either the docks on the ocean or the lake outside of the cave is the easiest place to catch fish.

Here's my story: I started fishing really early on at the pier down by Willy's shop. In spring, it has sardines, which are common and easy to catch. The secret woods lake is probably going to be better, as carp have always been an easy fish for me (and apparently others) and Woodskip is harder but also more rare. Also, the OP said he was only level 1, which means crab pots will have to wait, as they're unlocked at level 2.
Edit: To be more clear, you can ONLY catch Woodskip and Carp in the Secret Woods Lake

Correction: You can catch Catfish, Carp, and Woodskip in the Secret Woods Pond.
Edit: Catfish is more difficult than Woodskip but can only be found in the summer while raining.

Thanks, everyone! I'll try these locations and hope that a lot of annoying and frustrating practice will help. But I don't even get CLOSE to staying in that small bar while trying to reel them in. It looks like I keep doing exactly the opposite of what you have to do to reel them in. I feel like a complete idiot, but I'll plug away at it. I got a crab pot that I can't use yet (still low-level 1), and a few lures and spinners, etc., that I bought from the traveling cart, etc., that I also can't use yet. Still stuck with that first pole and NOTHING else but small reeling bars when I get a hit. Whee. :)

And although the wiki is a marvelous thing that I keep open all the time on my second monitor while I'm playing, sometimes getting personal answers to very specific questions in here is a lot more friendly and useful. A wiki will never give you that sort of personal touch.

So, thanks to you all! These sorts of answers really do help. At the very least, they lend encouragement and keep me from feeling frustrated. :)

Austruck, have you tried using trout soup for the fishing bonus? For the first two years of my game play I basically ignored fishing because I personally found it frustrating. Once I started using trout soup (and then other crafted items for the fishing bonuses) I was able to make slow progress in my fishing skills. Eating the trout soup I bought at Willy's shop was the only thing that let me upgrade my skills to level 2.

I hope this helps!
