Gathering Hay for Animals
I have 2 goats, 3 cows, 4 chickens, and 2 ducks. Lately, I haven't had enough hay to feed them and not enough grass to get hay. I bought grass starters wich were expensive and put them in a small fence area outside their barn. The grass only lasted like 4 days though. Is their a better way to feed them?

Plant lots of grass in the fenced in area (how big is the area you have? If you have that many animals then you might need a bigger area). All of the animals should eat one bit of grass a day, so that means you need enough grass in there that it naturally spreads at the same rate that the animals eat it. I also keeo an area of my farm just for growing grass. Whenever my hay levels get low I go through this area and intermittently cut the grass (not a big area, just little holes in the area, so that they'll grow back easier). Hope that helps!

early game when money is an issue it can be expensive to buy both hay and starters, make sure you clear enough trees so hay will spawn in spring and summer, then every other day cut down in between the layers so it can regrow. build a fence with gates in the middle of your fenced area and plant starters there and close it off to grow, when its done open the gates. You can also grow some in the other more immediate area.

Making mayyonaise from the eggs your chickens lay will pay for the chickens hay that day, as well as leave a profit which can be reinvested into more hay for other animals. If you're still early-game, and you've started on the barn animals, consider prioritizing your coop upgrades and let your chickens outnumber the other animals on your farm. This'll create a passive income which you can directly invest building up a surplus of animal feed, until you get your grass situation sorted out (keep in mind that you can plant grass starters basically anywhere on the map).

This is how big my farm is. Just about how big does it need to be for it to multiply?

Grass grows about 1 tile around it per day iirc, so it needs to be quite a bit bigger in order to effectively regrow.

thank you for the helpful responses

You can actually plant grass then surround it by a 2x2 set of fences. Oddly the grass spreads out of the fences but the animals can't get at all of it.

I can get a picture of my set-up if you want, assuming I can figure out how to attach it to the forums.

Go to the picture in your online screenshot library, right click and select copy page url, and paste it into the reply box. It automatically puts it in.

Also nice grass preserve
