Crows can sometimes eat seeds or kill plants; scarecrows should prevent that but I *think* there are still ways that crows can become bold enough to even ignore the scarecrows (it would be a factor of how many seeds you've planted, how many scarecrows there are, maybe the weather or time of season... I just remember that crows have different levels of activity, and that scarecrows are more effective when they overlap).
I've had some random, unaccounted for crop deaths too, which I've been putting down to crow attacks since I recall that they mostly happened on clear days -- generally through Fall when there's no lightning around at all.
