Easier to pet them when doors are closed. I wake up each morning, go into the coop and barn, pet them all, get the milk, get the eggs. Once I'm done, I open doors for them. I let doors open all day. When I come back home, anytime after 6pm is fine, I close the doors for the night. Nothing I hate more than forgetting the doors and next morning they're all over the place.
Leaving them open all night leaves them vulnerable to prey as well. You've been lucky. As have I, since I forget to close them frequently (especially on Mine days when I'm getting back lat and have a full inventory).
I didn't know this until one time I saw an animal outside, went in to check if the rest were in there and saw that they were =all= there and accounted for. Went back outside and saw the one bird that was pacing was now gone.
I have seen where one would glytch utside like that and never get back inside. The next morning the condition reads something like she was left outside with the door shut and is grumpy.
