beginner's crop profit confusion
hi all, I've just bought this awesome game from the summer sale and am enjoying my first few hours of it,,

Anyways, i've looked at crop guides on how to make gold and every single guide says potatos are the best but then i did some math of my own and found that even green beans beat potatos in profit since they regrow without having to buy another batch of seeds.

potato: 80g profit per potato, 100x seeds, can be planted 4-5 times before the month ends which equals 80 x 100 x 5 = 40000 gold, (MINUS!) all the seeds you bought 50g x 100 x 5 = 25000g for a total of 15000g profit only if you planted 100 seeds within that month and immediately replace the 100 seeds once harvested without wasting a day. oh and bonus multiple potaoes bump it up to 19000g-ish profit

green beans: 40 x 100 x 7 = 28000g minus 60 x 100 = 6000 which totals to a 22000 gold profit.

is there something i'm missing? I don't understand how potatos are one of the better cros out there if you have to replant them and waste 50g on each seed if you could just buy green beans which will regrow for free. TY all have fun playing!

This guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI1vvRJPlxU argues that parsnips are actually the most profitable to use during the FURST spring because they are cheap to buy and you don't have enough income to buy large quantities of other crops at the start. The more you can plant the more profit you can make so planting like a ton of parsnips is gonna be more profitable than planting a small amount of higher yeild crops.

I think the deal you are overlooking is that potatos have a chance of giving more than one potato. So 100 seed planted may be over 150 potatos to sell. The crops that regrow take a few days to regrow after they've been harvested. In order to water 100 potatos you are gonna need some good energy food too.

oh yea thx for the helpful tips, oh and i've already added the bonus potatos in my calculations :D the thing that's bringing potatos down are the seeds which you need to buy again every time you harvest the previous batch. people tend to ignore the seed cost when making profit clculations i don't understand why :(
I only remember back from playing Harvest Moon that crops that you can harvest more then once were good for money. Buy once, harvest all season. They take some time to grow, they dont give as much money as other crops but I think its worth it.

In the end, always mix them so you have a steady flow of money.
Also, get corn in the Summer because it lasts into the fall (Stolen from the ingame TV channel :P)

When all is said and done all of the crops yield a profit- but if you're looking to min/max, invest in berries. Strawberries in spring, Blueberries in Summer, Cranberries in fall- they last the entire season and each harvest of each plant yields three berries.

Of course, once you get to Summer Hops are an important crop to pick up as well, even before you unlock kegs- they give you a base 51 energy, and the gold star hops give you 81. For a crop you get to harvest every day, even if you aren't planning on brewing them for the Pale Ale (which sells for 300 per unit), they're by far the best source of renewable energy early-game. Of course, you could always use the Spa to regenerate your energy, but that makes you walk all the way up there, so it's practical to keep your alternatives on hand.
yup tnx all for your helpful replies i have decided that it would prob be better fro me to stick with regrowing plants since im too lazy to plant them all again XD berries seem to do the most profit too :D
Well, it's profit.

Here http://stardewvalleywiki.com/Crops is an overview of all crops on the wiki. They have a gold-per-day-rate calculated for easy comparison.

Your potato example was wrong: According to the wiki, potatoes yield 1.25 times the number of seeds. You probably calculated 1.25 x profit, which would be around 19,000, but is wrong. It has to be 1.25 x 80 x 100 x 5 = 50,000 gold minus 50 x 100 x 5 = 25,000 gold for the seeds, which would be 25,000 gold. It takes 30 days (a bit more than a month) to grow them, so it's 25,000 / 100 / 30 = 8.333 gold per potato per day, which is exactly the number, the wiki shows.

The beans in your example yield 40 x 100 x 7 = 28,000 minus 60 x 100 = 6,000, with 22,000 profit in 28 days. That's 22,000 / 100 / 28 = 7.857 gold per bean per day. The wiki calculates only 6 harvests in 25 days (probably you can't harvest the last one): (40 x 100 x 6 - 60 x 100) / 100 / 25 = 18,000 / 100 / 25 = 7.2 gold per bean per day.

To get more money out of your crops make wine (3 * base value) or jelly/pickles (50 + 2 * base value). To get rid of the costs for seeds, craft some seed makers (wood+gold+coal, farming level 9), which yields 1-3 seeds per crop. So you need about half of your harvest to turn into seeds for the next year. I take only 1/10 th of my harvest and replant the seeds, I get out of those in the green house, until I have enough seeds for the next year.
oh wow, tnx ffets you are absolutely right it makes perfect sense now. I'm still going to stick with strawberries and beans next spring since potatoes rely on rng XD

oh and i havent gone far enough to see the wonders of these seed makes you were talking about so i'll just have to stick with the easiest, least troublesome plants for now. TY all for your help appreciated it!
