Not to mention the fact that just looking past the first page, you'd see fifty other topics about this same exact question that has been answered the same way.
I know exactly what 'shunning' update you were talking about, and that was just a guy giving his opinion via an article on how 'cheery and obtuse' the game felt to him. Some malarkey about 'lacking any darker or dramatic elements', which wound up smack dab at the top of the Community tab through Steam.
CA is most assuredly still a very active developer- SDV v1.1 is on its' way this year, and the game is being ported to consoles and Mac/Linux.
You can keep track of progress by follwing him on twitter, or checking the official website for the game which is sufficiently active in doling out information.
As for Multiplayer, that's been in the works for a while and the last time we got a demo of it was from an earlier build of the game- I'm not exactly sure what's up with it but from what CA says it shouldn't be too far away with the tech assistance he's been getting- which is nice to hear, since him doing everything himself would have drawn the process out while he worked on 1.1.
'' So today, I’m pleased to officially announce that Stardew Valley is coming to the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Wii U! ''
As you can see the creator was working hard to make the game available to other platforms, not just us pc gamers :) Give things some time, it's hard to expect him to keep pumping out updates with such rapid pace, maybe we'll get a big update someday instead of continuosly getting small ones :)

Took this from the website, now just sit tight and wait till it actually happens.
Chucklefish = Starbound btw ;)
Pyrofish hates people asking questions. Think of the tryhard nerdy kid in high school that gets super mad when people ask questions. Seeing things as super black and white. The best thing to do is just ignore him.
It's like there's an echo in here...
