Mod to remove fence decay?
Pretty annoying feature. Is there a way to get rid of it?

There are a few mods on the Nexus that have 'Durable Fences' attached to them. I use C J B CheatMenu (no spaces. Steam censors C J B together for some reason) for the durable fences and turning off relationship decay from the start. I get too distracted by farming/mining/fishing to keep track of when I last gave people gifts, so it helps.

Can it be added to a save i've already been playing?

We can still hope vanilla removes the decay in the update since its never seemed to make gameplay any better.

I sure hope so. It really has no purpose. Just an inconvenience when you're trying to make your farm look nice. If fences actually had some sort of use, aside from cosmetic, I could maybe understand it, but even then the current rate that it decays is a bit much.

I'm hoping for this. I haven't been successful at working the fence decay mods and I've just been fenceless lately. I really want fences for more decoration and organization, but I don't have the patience to deal with constantly replacing them.

I thought fences were supposed to protect crops from disappearing or failing overnight. Is there really no need for them? Have I been wasting my time with these danged things?

You can contain a field of grass with fences, so you can stop it from spreading (or you can fence off animals from your spreading grass).
As Pyrofish said, you should use scarecrows to protect your crops from crows (protected area: 8 tiles radius around the scarecrow).
Your crops are not protected from thunderstorms though. Use Lightning rods to catch lightning strikes, which could otherwise damage your crops.

Fences do have a use, a pure physical one.
