How can I make a better farm design
That's it, I can never make a design that looks nice but is also functional.

Use reference, they are helpful in designing your farms. For functional and nice looking farm i suggest using standard farm and build a "kinda" symmetrical layout. Divide the farm with grids by using path tiles, into a few different sections. And then start designing where you want to put the barns, coop, crops etc.

some of us have posted pictures, maybe we need to do that more.
Read thru my Post Rich Farm Success and progress:

I went into great detail on how I designed my farm, and it was extremely functional and I think it looked great too..
It takes practice, and patience and sometimes you move things around a lot. Now what I try to do is lay out my paths and walkways where I want them first, and place my buildings around them. The farm layout map you choose makes a huge difference too. Using trees or trellis flowers for fences helps too. making good use of space,
Play around with paint colors on your buildings, or use mods to change the look of buildings -- there are lots of choices out there.

This depends on what exactly your problems are.
There are just a few "rules" when it comes to building, so making something non-functional in this game is very hard.

That's pretty epic. Even has modded layouts. :doublenickels:

It should have a sharing future. Basically it allows you to save your layout then let other people download it so that they can use it to do their own modifications to the layout.

You mean feature? I guess we already sort of have that in the case of screenshot or artwork sharing which is more or less what some of us are doing here, though IMO the ability to actually use them ourselves in-game doesn't really seem like a good fit for a game like this due to the way that the main progression is tied to the customisation of the farm itself or vice-versa.

Maybe an actual in-game map sharing feature similar to what you describe would be a much better fit for something like Create a Park in Tony Hawk or Stage Builder in Smash Bros, games where the main progression system is separate from the creation features themselves if that makes any sense. I definitely get where you're coming from, however.

But to answer the original topic of how to make a better farm design - I'd suggest you look at some of the screenshots or artwork that some users have posted here as inspiration for your own designs. My advice here is to learn from the best. :espresso:

Some people just like their farm to be pretty and orderly, but they suck at creating it by themselves. This planner helps them. Like using a blueprint. Without having to rely on screenshots that doesn't show the grid. Tools like this also helps out reorganizing your farm.
