Scientifically, it's fruit. However, in common usage and for the purposes of commerce, the tomato is a vegetable.

"Nix v. Hedden, 149 U.S. 304 (1893), was a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States that, under U.S. customs regulations, the tomato should be classified as a vegetable rather than a fruit.[1] The Court's unanimous opinion held that the Tariff Act of 1883 used the ordinary meaning of the words "fruit" and "vegetable," instead of the technical botanical meaning."

It has been said, but as someone who studied biology and horticulture, and has friends who are chefs the definitions for both things come from different places. There is no biological definition for a vegetable, and fruit and vegetables are not opposites.

To add to that confusion; bell pepper, cucumber, eggplant, beans, etc. can be considered to be both a fruit and a vegetable.

And then there are the different kinds of "beans", which are often lumped together when they shouldn't be. So, it stands to reason that there is still confusion about tomatoes being fruits and/or vegetables. Also also, the English language sucks when it comes to specifics.

Hell, some people still think "white" chocolate is actual chocolate. Sacrilege!

Yes. It is rather funny. Especially as there is an argument between Robin and Demetrius about this in the game. So the Dev clearly knows about it, but still put it into the game.

The case had nothing to do with those things. Nix sued to avoid paying tariffs on tomatoes by using a definition of the term "fruit" that was not appropriate for or intended by the legislators that enacted the tariff on imported vegetables. Also, There was no categorical distinction used for fruits and vegetables in USDA guidelines until 1942, nearly 50 years later. That being said, USDA dietary guidelines have been influenced by factors outside of nutrition. Publications during wartime and the great depression have suggested balances that had to optimize not only an ideal diet, but the production capacity and scarcity of food. For example, they have been typically grain heavy because grains are easy to produce and store. They also do a good job of staving off hunger, but not necessarily long term health.

I intended for the example case to show that there are multiple definitions for terminology and that there are specific conditions that need to be considered on when to use them. It is important to take into account not only the intentions of the speaker, but who is going to be using the terminology and for what purpose.

Using the scientific definition of fruit (a seed bearing structure in flowering plants) in Stardew Valley would be less appropriate than the common, culinary or trade usage. In relation to fruits, the activities in the game are predominantly laypersons conducting trade, farming and culinary tasks. There's no need to make the distinction that tomatoes contain seeds. However, it is useful to know that tomatoes (as vegetables using the common and culinary usage of "fruit") can be made into pickles or juice and are used in savory dishes.

I have been raised to believe that the tomato is a vegetable. In my mind I still believe it is because it's always used with other vegetables, even in V8 juice (I think), and because of it's inner texture. Also a tomato does not taste "fruity". Now there is a tomato that is a cross between tomato and grapes, that I would call a fruit.

Technically a vegetable is any plant part that can be eaten.

All fruits are vegetables.
