Issue with dark talisman quest

I'm relatively far into the game (year 4, completed community center) and as I've been working to finish up various quests, I realized that the dark talisman quest was no longer logged in my journal despite having gotten the wizard railroad cutscene and having the mutant bug lair unlocked. I talked to both the wizard and krobus but neither mentioned the quest, so I went ahead and beat the mutant bug lair. When I clicked on the chest with the dark talisman, it gave me a box with text about it but there was no icon and the dark talisman was not in my wallet. The cave by the railroad was not unlocked and neither the wizard nor krobus mentioned the quest, yet again. I returned to the mutant bug lair and when I clicked on the chest again, the game paused and then totally disappeared. Any advice? I'd really like to unlock the witch's hut but at this point I'm not sure how
