Can you split the amount of wood between your chest and backpack?

Yes you can. I'm not sure how to do it on a mouse and keyboard, but on a controller, you can (if I remember correctly) use the left face button (X on XBOX) to store one at a time in either your chest or storage instead of all at once.

you can hold left shift to split a stack in half and then move to a chest.

You can also right click to move one at a time. Combine the two techniques to get the exact amount you want.
