Question about animals on farm
Can I leave the barn/coop doors open overnight if the weather is nice? I usually close them every night but it seems like the pig only makes a truffle if I keep it open. I have them fenced in a large pen with grass if that makes a difference.

The chickens are really picky. They want the door opened in the morning (weather permitting) and closed at night. Clicking on them once a day is a must too if you want happy chickens. If you dont do this they will be sad, hearts will go up very slowly and you wont get as many eggs. Also its the only way to get the large eggs.

I havn't started raising cows yet so I don't know their quirks yet.

I have 2 cows and have left the door open all day in the Fall. I think they get upset if you don't close the door at night because I couldn't milk them 2 days in a row. XD

Yeah, leaving the doors open overnight hurts your relationship with your animals, so it's recommended that you close it every night.
As for your pig, I don't know why you don't get truffle if you close it. I close my barns every day after my animals go inside and there's still truffle somewhere near my barn.

On top of everything being said here, your animals have a chance of being killed in the night by monsters if you leave the doors open.

So, generally, this is a bad idea. Always close coops and barns. My girlfriend learned the hard way, even after I warned her about this. lol

(Edit: At least I'm assuming they're killed, animals will be panicked if you inspect them and it'll say stuff like your animals are scared or stressed out and that it "seems something bad has happened last night" and you'll be missing an animal.)

They don't get as mad if you have a heather, but it's definitely smart to close it every night.

Does this apply with a fenced in pen though? I've forgotten everything open more than once and the animals are still always "fine". Sometimes the cow might not make milk or one of the chicken might not lay an egg, but they've never been worse than fine for me.

I think so, my girlfriend had her barns/coops in the same general area and fenced them in so they could walk about during the day in a small enclosure. Still one of her chickens was killed because she forget to close the gate/door, whatever you wanna call it.

Maybe you're just lucky! :)

I have never ever close my barn/coop doors. im in my 4th year. My coop is consistently filled with quality eggs every single day.

My barn animals produce milk 90% of the time. (with gold and iridium quality too).

I do have a fenced area for them to wander and heaters too.

If thats true then heres what I think about it. When you get their hearts up to max they keep on producing. But I bet it took you a lot longer to get them to max. I got large eggs and now large milk on the very first gathering.

Ive only had 1 missed egg (3 eggs that day instead of 4). And one other incident when there was an explosion in during the night that spooked them (no eggs for 2 days and they got the grumpy emote).

Closing the door makes them happier and fills the hearts faster. If you dont do it then you will have to wait a long time before production gets into full swing.

I believe you are referring to a wild animal attack. This is not dependent on the wilderness farm or the Dark Shrine of Night Terrors . A wild animal attack may happen on any farm. It usually happens when an animal is left outside with the doors closed. To lean more about this I have provided a link: https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Animals#Wild_Animal_Attacks
