There's objectives, and a lot of different objectives which keeps it fresh, but a lot of them are build this, build that or fetching/farming stuff. There's a very nice sense of progression though with levelling up/EXP.
A lot of it is to do with farming, however there is a little openess to it, for instance you could also be an adventurer and focus on upgrading armour and defeating monsters (however as far as I can see it's only in a cave, and it's somewhat a dungeon crawler, combat pretty similar to terraria though). So you could still play the game without farming (?) or at least minimum farming since there's no story. (Question mark there because I'm only 6 hours into it and I love the farming aspect, not fully sure if that's a correct statement but if you fish you should still be able to make money at the start. Not sure if the starting objectives/tutorial count but if they don't then you should).
You could also live being a fisherman and fishing, only problem is you have to go home every night.
There are a ton of unlockables, craftables, collectibles, upgrades, levelling etc. If you've played animal crossing it's pretty much that kind of gameplay.
I found terraria to be stale after a while (although I didn't know about the bosses and endgame stuff) which adds a good incentive but it became too grindy for me, not much in the way of mechanics either. Stardew has totally different mechanics for each grinding thing i.e. farming, fishing, fighting. On a side note though there's been a recent mod to terraria which adds a campaign (I think it's a kind of RPG style campaign). I think you might enjoy terraria more with that.
So no it has no solid story but it has plenty of objectives and things to do. Crafting/building/farming/grinding is most definately a major part though. Maybe watch some mid-game playthroughs and come to your own conclusion on it though.
In short, you make your own story based on your preferences. Your story is not set in stone, but you're not as free as in eg. Terraria. It guides you halfway but still gives you some creativity and choices.
Personally, I prefer this game over Terraria. It's a very good game with long-term motivation. Good music, nice art, lovely made.
something like rune factory has a story this just has a very vague goal of unlocking new areas and farm buildings and little friendship events with the townspeople.
unless you makew your own challenge (ie make x money by x date or have x built in x days) there is no real structure to it.
heck you cant even fail. its literally impossible. you dont have to make repayments etc or even pay to maintain anything or even eat anything!.
you can literally sleep everyday for 10 years and not be at all behind in any way.
The objectives aren't timed, but I don't think that makes it any less of a storyline or objectives. It's just that things won't happen unless you, the player, are doing things.
But your specific execution of that is entirely up to you. It's a sandbox type game, pursue what interests you.
Each of the 30 giftable villagers has their own short plot thread and sequence of cutscenes associated with them. These are expanded a bit for the 12 mariage candidates, though not much. Additionally, the valley itself has a bit of contextual backstory that you can discover as you play and fill out the collection in the library.
If you want the depth of a typical RPG, you're not going to find that here. But if you just want some context to help give you a reason to care about the valley and its inhabitents, it's there and it gives you a lot more to work with than, say, Terraria.
Edit: There's twelve marriage candidates as of last patch.
