- Talking to people is important to keep your relationship up, because not talking to them lowers your relation (very slightly) every day. Festivals still don't count, though. You have to talk to them during the normal day.
- You don't get affection from buying things from the store, I think. You'll have to do actual quests for the vendor and give gifts/do events. You can talk to them when they are not in the store, or you can just walk around the counter to not buy stuff and still talk (a lot of people on youtube don't seem to realize this).
- Winning festivals does not give affection, only prizes. However, there are some festivals that don't have "winning" something, but still give affection, such as the dance (affection plus with dance partner) or with the luau (affection with everyone plus or minus, depending on your input).

The wiki doesn't say anything about if festivals count as normal talking or not in terms of providing affection, but my guess would be that they do NOT (since, at the beginning of the game when tasked with introducing yourself to everyone, talking to people at the festival does not count as introducing yourself).
As far as I am aware, there is NO bonus to buying things from certain shops (although they sometimes do, somewhat desperately, ask you to spend money at their shop xD)
