raising farming experience in winter
what methods are viable? I know winter seeds just raise foraging but does hoeing and watering them count for farming still?

No, because you only get farming credit for harvesting crops. Work on getting the greenhouse if you want to farm in the winter.

Edit: I usually have no trouble maxing farming skills in the second year, even without farming the first winter.

Raising animals - petting, milking, picking up eggs etc. gives you farming experience. Obviously, if you have unlocked the greenhouse, then farming in there. Not sure if growing vegetables in the pots you get from Granny gives you farming experience, although it should.

Right, sorry, forgot about the animals!

Most harvesting during winter is done by winter seeds or greenhouse. However winter seeds does not give farming XP.

Try not to stress your skill level. I usually just play the game and end up with level 10 in all the skills by end of the second year. GF too and she's even less active than I am in the game.

Getting the greenhouse as soon as possible makes winters easy to gain what you need to advance. Sure, you can try other methods, but if you have high-paying crops in abundance all year long, it makes things much easier.

Now if I could just find a way to increase that bedamned fishing skill level quickly...without actually having to fish. :P

Don't Crab Pots give you fishing exp? Set up a bunch of them and make rounds every day.

Yes, crab pots give xp, but slowly.

It's the whole fishing thing in this game that I loathe, which is too bad, since I tend to enjoy it in other games I've played. But I'll give the crab pots a whirl, since I've neglected them in previous playthroughs. To be blunt, once/if I get the achievement for it, I doubt I'll ever fish in this game again. Give me a thousand acres of cropland to reap, but stuff the fishing. :P

I don't particularly like fishing in any game. I have found though that after initially being incredibly bad at it in this game I can fish reasonably well after many hours of it. Use the food liberally and always buy the best rod as soon as you can. But I can totally understand not wanting to fish.

There have been a few that pretty much require becoming an expert fisherperson in order to get high amounts of money for more expensive gear and such, and fortunately the fishing mini-games in those were quite fun. Some of the Final Fantasy games make it harder than it needs to be, and most of the Elder Scrolls games where fishing is a sidequest is mostly based on RNGs to determine if you get a Mega-Super-Gold-Level-Ultimate-Fish...or a scrod.

But I'll try the tips and see if I can at least catch something besides dripping copies of the Stardew Valley Gazette. :P

Those are worthy catches! Do not disparage turning newspaper into cloth :)

Edit: also make sure to use bait and lures. I mostly only use the cork or trap bobbers.

I have a friend who uses old newspapers for a great many things, especially insulation. She's quite the genius when it comes to recycling, although I'm not sure if she's turned multiple copies of the New York Times Sunday Edition into a full wardrobe yet. Knowing her, she could though.

I have seen furniture made out of newspaper, looked pretty neat. Shellacked I think.
