slingshot - help please

I can do the plate shoot thing in the festivals, I assumed the slingshot would work the same, but it isn't and I can't figure out how to give it ammo. I'm playing using a game controller but I've tried right clicking with the mouse as I saw in another instruction and can't get it to work with that either.

It's no different from how you put bait in a fishing pole. Pick stones, then point slingshot and right-click.

I've haven't figured out the fishing pole either. so you're saying to select stones and then point sling shot. but when I pick stones, how can I point the slingshot? how do I select 2 things at once?
I have bait and have fished trash, but have no idea how to put bait or lures on the fishing pole. I do find tutorials annoying in many games, but I haven't seen any in this game telling how to use these things when they become available. I'm in year 4 and still puzzled by this.

Open the pause menu and go into your inventory
Pick up the stone by selecting it from the inventory screen
While still holding the stone, move your cursor over the slingshot (don't select it)
Press X (left face button) to place the stone into your slingshot

If done right, you should have the stone in your slingshot and ready for use. You can put bait into your fishing rod using basically the same steps.

In addition to what NBOX21 said, the mouse-only way to load fishing poles and slingshots is:

Left-Click on bait/lure (for fishing rod) or stone/explosive ammo (for slingshot) to select it
Right-Click on fishing rod or slingshot to load it
