It's just an info for the player who aren't sure if the game has a decomposition mechanic.

Example: If you put a wooden fence down on your farm, it's going to deteriorate and vanish over time (in 1 month I think).
If you put the same wooden fence post in a chest, you can store it safely for however long you want.
As far as I'm aware, there is no difference between wooden chests or stone chests as they serve the exact same function and purpose. It's just that stone chests look cool.
Game still holds up (After a few false starts and Mod adds.)
