Is there any penalty to cutting down the trees in the Forest/Town?

It seems that they can't be replanted, and waiting for trees to grow on your farm is painstaking when you're needing wood in the early game (on these newer farm maps, that have less trees).

I pretty much just left all the trees alone on the default map. Is there any penalty?

Edit: On a side note. If you leave trees, will seeds drop in the Forest for trees to naturally regrow. Does anyone happen to know?

trees you cut down that arent from your farm start to regrow the next day (or maybe 2) in the same spot.
