Game won't recognize controller?

Hi all, i've been searching the internet for so long and can't figure out the solution X(

For some reason my macbook pro picks up my controller perfectly but the game just doesn't see it. As a side note, when I go into steam big picture mode all my face buttons are switched around. When I go into preferences there's an entry for "XBox 360 Controllers" and all the correct buttons highlight when I press them, and all the different axis work just as expected.

close steam and reopen it. Like exit steam completely. Steam has an issue where it will sometimes for whatever reason store your current controller as '2nd controller' on an xbox controller-like if it gets unplugged-and you have to completely close and reopen steam to fix it.

oh, i saw controller support on the store page and assumed it would work

I've played a ton of hours of this game with a 360 controller, now it wont work for me either. Really frustrating.
