Wooden Mallet
So I have the insect sword right now, but the wooden mallet seems better, is there a reason insect is higher level and costs more and which should I use?

the wooden mallet is a hammer so it does more damage but in return is slower to swing.

Heavy is knockback. If we're talking about the same mallet I found it to be far too slow to be worth the extra damage.

Insect head sword also has +2 speed so the normal speed difference between sword and hammer is restored, Insect head has a 4% crit rate vs the wooden hamers 2%. The hammer only boasts and extra 5 damage per hit on average. High crit and attack speed generally work out to better damage over time.

I normally have much better swords like the claymore or the obsidian edge by the time I get the insect sword.

Swing each weapon 5 times, as fast as you can. See how fast they are. If you can swing the sword 7 times in the time the hammer swings 5 times, then do sword damage * 7 and hammer damage * 5 and see which number is higher.

Keep in mind, the sword can block/parry flying enemies, while the hammer can shove enemies away from you if your health gets low.

I'll take the sword, 9 times out of 10.
