Tap the left mouse button do not press and hold but tap a fast as you can to raise the bar and stop tapping to lower it.
If all else fails fish for trash in your farm pond its slow but you will catch trash and it will give xp which in turn will give you a larger bar which will make fishing easier, do it to use up your last bit of energy before going to bed.
The other way is to do the crab pot bundle in the community center by foraging on the beach for shells and getting a crab from the hermit crab in the mines, crab pots will give fishing xp and once again make that darn fishing bar bigger.
Fishing sucks. There are lots of us who hate it. Don't get discouraged, and don't let the pro-fishing crowd make you feel like your opinion is invalid either.
That having been said, even though I personally despise fishing, I have managed to master it enough to do the Community bundles.
Here's what you should do:
First off, try fishing in the Mountain Lake near Robin's house. The most common fish in that lake are Carp. Carp are sluggish. It is frequently possible to catch Carp without moving the green bar at all. If you hook something that's a lot jumpier than a Carp, don't worry about it, just let it escape. Use short casts, not long ones.
Second, Willy sells Trout Soup. Trout Soup gives you a +1 to fishing. It might not seem like much, but it does help in the beginning.
Third, fish in the ponds on your farm. You'll only catch trash, but it'll still give you some fishing skill (not much, but a little), and the junk you catch can be converted into useful building materials with a Recycling Machine.
Finally, complete the Crab Pot Bundle. The Crab Pot Bundle requires 5 items, but the selection you can choose from is quite large. Of those items, 4 are shells you can pick up on the beach, meaning no fishing required. The fifth item can be a crab. Crabs can be found in the mines, and are gathered by fighting, so again, no fishing required.
The reward is three Crab Pots. Bait them and leave them in a body of water, every day you'll get a "fish" of some sort. This will also give you fishing skill.
Once you've actually gotten some skill (via methods other than actual fishing) your green bar will get bigger, and catching the trickier stuff will seem a LOT easier.
Don't give up, even if you hate it, it's possible to do okay at it.
Best way I know how to explain it is, you're supposed to hold and release the mouse button. LOTS of people are under the impression you have to spamclick your mouse, for some reason.
By default the 'C' key mirrors the left mouse button and I find that easier to use. Hold C to raise your rod and release it to cast. That's the easy part. A strike is signified by an ! above your head - just tap C immediately. You will either catch trash of get a hit.
When you do get a hit, wait to see what the fish is going to do. Many of the spring fish hardly move at all. When they do move hold C to lift the green bar and release C to lower it. In practice I find it easier to tap C repeatedly, increasing the rate as the fish goes up the water column and slackening off as it drops.
Target the easiest fish to catch while you are learning. For instance (as already mentioned) carp in the mountain lake east of robin's house, plus anchovy, sardines and herrings from the beach.
So u maybe just need a bit more practice?
Frustrating new players while with the best rod and maximum skill the Trap Bobber (that makes fish escape slower) feels too mandatory for all the hard to catch fishes so that the other tackles aren't used so much, at least by me.
Regular tools have 4 stages:
basic -> copper -> iron -> gold -> iridium.
Rods get only 2:
basic -> +bait -> +bait & +tackle
I wouldn't mind a 3rd version that can have 2 different kinds of tackles equipped so that the Trap Bobber alone can be used along with some other kind of tackle.
To balance out the issue for starters their fishing skill should determine how hard to catch the fish is that bites: lower skill = easier to catch fish bites only, never any hard to catch fish (until the fishing skill is high enough). The fishing skill should be limited by the type of fishing rod used - no proceeding in skill with bad gearm but still be useful to catch better to best quality fish within that range. The type of rod should determine how fast a fish can be reeled in - fish that escapes more easily is harder to reel ine - requires better (or best) rod while the easy to catch fish can be reeled in fast. On top of that it'd be nice if treasure would be automatically caught if the fish is caught while the fishing bar rests on fish and treasure - even without the treasure bar being 100% filled yet. As for the "treasure": The rod type should also determine what's in there. I don't need 1x bait in my "treasure" for an Iridium Rod. A nice bonus would also be a reduced chance for seaweed and junk the better the fishing rod is: better rod = lower junk chance. Imo the tackle & bait also shouldn't suffer if there was no fish but just trash - as no biting & reeling took place.
In general the tooltips should also be more useful:
They should also state where, during which season(s) and from-to which time certain fish can be found, along with the sell value being listed for all quality types.
Alternatively higher fishing skill could also mean fish is reeled in faster and escapes slower (varying by fish type) and the better rods also add that same kind of bonus - which then could mean to remove the Trap Bobber from the game or decrease it's effect so that the other tackles also get their turn. As each individual type of fish could have it's own number that determines by how much that easy to catch & fast reeled in value is modified certain fish (legendary) could remain hard to catch.
I also didn't understand what I was supposed to be doing to start with. I thought I somehow was supposed to push the fish to the top with the green "bubble" instead of keeping the fish withing the bounds of the bubble. I can laugh about it now, but I was so confused at the time.
I do agree that better fishing rods should get more benefits. Maybe let bamboo have bait, fiberglass have tackle, iridium have 2 tackle? With each tier of fishing rod being able to catch silver, gold and iridium star fish, because right now the best kind of fish, without cheating, is gold star.
