But the bridge is a separate calculation for me.
silo->make some hay-> build coop or barn -> buy some animals.
Personally I prioritize the barn more, because I want to get to the truffels as fast as I can.
Thanks for helping me figure that out. :)
but if you can afford a barn/coop i'd totally get that first. yeah you might have to buy a day or two of food on rainy days but you make that back the first day your animal produces eggs/milk and you get that egg/milk sooner than if you waste time on the silo.
Generally speaking, apart from pigs, the animals don't offer a lot of monetary gains. So you want to focus on them last.
How can you say this? This is just super wrong.
Animals, of all types, are moneymakers. Four chickens will earn back the cost of their coop and themselves in two weeks, if you have mayo machines.
People's problem with animals is that they only buy one of each type. That's like having a hot-water-faucet for money stream, but only turning it on to "trickle".
Go big on animals! Get all the machines to upgrade their products, and keep those machines in their barns to process on the spot. Animals help make you RICH, so you can afford every other thing in the game.
Not to mention eggs are good gifts for lots of people, and cheese is really good food for in the mines.
By petting the chickens (even if you don't allow them outside) you can gradually raise their happiness and they'll produce larger, higher quality eggs. On eggs alone, you can probably make about 500 gold a day. That will cover the hay expenses, and pay off the initial investment in the Coop in about 28 days.
Silos are pretty inexpensive to build, and if you're using one, and cutting your own hay, you can push yourself to profitability faster. (But of course, it is an opportunity cost issue, because you're contributing the labor to produce your own hay instead, so ... trade offs).
Also, if you're friends with Marnie, she'll occasionally send you hay. Additionally, if you're growing Wheat, when you harvest it, you'll also get some Hay, so that helps too.
Personally, I don't even build a coop until I've already got the mats for Mayo machines. With Mayo machines you can push your base revenue to about 760 gold per day. With the potential of up to 1140. With moderate care (of the chickens), you'll probably average 900 to 1000 per day. Less what you take out for your own needs of course. That lets us pay off the basic Coop in about 10 days (once the chickens are fully grown and at least moderately happy).
Mayo is also an Artisanal good, so ... you can buff the Mayo prices by 40% if you have that.
Personally, I find the animals extremely time intensive, and I prefer to farm, but ... I also like to do the Community Center, so I usually end up with a full Coop, and at least some Barn animals (I think I usually do two cows, two goats, one sheep and one pig).
As with the Coop, I don't start a Barn unless I can already start making Cheese (or cloth, or Oil). If you're going to go into Pigs, it's extremely useful to have the Gatherer Profession as this gives you a 20% chance of doubling the number of Truffles you can collect.
I find pigs to be ... quirky. They're extremely expensive to start with, they don't produce Truffles during the Winter, or on rainy days. And some days, even if I let them out, they still don't find any. That said, one bottle of Artisan Truffle Oil will offset enough Hay to take care of the Pig for an entire season.
Fish Pond also functions as a well, so if you place it near your crops you can refill your watering can with ease.
Stable makes you go zoom so you can do more in a day, but it takes some focus to get the needed materials quickly.
House upgrade lets you cook. While you won't have tons of recipes early on there are some decent ones.
Vault is a little spoilery, so: it's possible, without any munchkinry or exploits, to complete the vault and mines before the end of spring 1. Learn how to do this at your own peril, as the focus on efficiency can take some of the fun out of the game.
Like how the fiberglass rod costs like 2k, which is like an entire day of fishing, but then it lets you fish 33%(?) faster. It pays itself off.
A maxed out tier 1 chicken coop costs 7.2k, and will produce around 800g every day. So within 2 weeks it'll be profiting for no real effort. I'm in Fall Y1 of my current file and a GOOD fishing day currently gets me around 5-6k. Getting just under 1k per day from a coop for zero effort is nice.
(But I'm also doing a challenge run right no, so no animals for me regardless!)
