How can I stop the game from pausing when I open the overlay?
Yes, the setting to have the game pause when the window is not in focus is disabled. It doesn't change anything.

I just want to shoot a quick message to a friend or my BF while sleeping or waiting for something to open, without having the game stop altogether.

Thing is, I do want it to pause when I hit the pause button, which doesn't work in multiplayer. I just don't want it to pause when I open the overlay.

then i don't understand what's the problem. For me pausing game with overlay is a good feature. It helps me in moments like fishing when i caught a fish and i need to scratch my butt or make a sip of coffe or suddenly go to the toilet. It's very useful:lunar2019coolpig:
Because I want to shoot a quick message while sleeping, or during certain scenes that bore me, or while waiting for half an hour to pass in-game, without the game stopping altogether. That's what I said in the OP.

I still don't get it. I see no problem here... Sending quick messages can be don't using mobile apps.
Because I don't want to:
1 - Find my phone.
2 - Unlock my phone.
3 - Open the app.
4 - Locate the friend I want on the app.
5 - Type a message on the app (much more slowly than with a keyboard).
6 - Send the message on the app.
7 - Eventually receive a reply on the app.
8 - Have to repeat steps 2 and 3 to read the reply.
9 - Repeat steps 5-8 until the conversation is "done".
Bonus: Have to repeat step 4 if I want to talk to someone else.

When I can just:
1 - Open the overlay.
2 - Type a message on the already-open tab.
3 - Close the overlay.
4 - Eventually receive the reply.
5 - Repeat steps 1-4 until the conversation is "done".

Also, some of my friends are only reachable via Steam.

Anyway, you're not going to debate me into not wanting this. If it can't be done, or if you don't know how to do it, just say so.

I'm not looking for reasons why you think this is a bad idea, nor am I trying to convince you of the usefulness of it. I just want to know two things: Can it be done? And if it can, how?

Maybe ask on the official forum? The modders aren't here.

I'm not sure I follow? You don't want time to pass when you message your friend?

Just have it in window full screen? When you alt tab out (or click on your 2nd monitor) it just takes you out of the game without pausing it.

What you are asking is kinda ridiculous and not many modder will take this request seriously. At this point you should do it yourself cause we do not know what you want exactly. (You want to have pause option but not when talking to your friend?)

Edit: Also I find it hilarious you don't have it setup the way you want. It's extremely easy to do. That's what you do when you first start a game. You tinker with options to have it how you want. I always play windowed full screen cause I have a 2nd monitor. Talking to friends on Steam is trivial. Shift + tab opens steam overlay. Takes 5s.

I thought this would be possible by default and that I'd just missed something, which is why I asked here.

I do want time to pass when I open the overlay, that's the whole problem: it doesn't.

I don't have a second monitor, and alt+tabbing defeats the purpose of the overlay, which lets me see when the thing I'm waiting for has started/ended (depending on what it is).

Windowed fullscreen keep the game going though? I just tested it. My game didn't pause when I opened steam overlay (it never does cause I always play windowed fullscreen)

Edit: Windowed fullscreen is like fullscreen but it's a pop up window you can "move" around. It typically keeps the game going in the background while you do other stuff. Some game have auto pause when you click outside the game window though but Stardew isn't one of them.

I do have it in windowed full screen, and yet it still pauses. Do you run the game and/or Steam as an administrator?

Just double check that. I probably am running it in admin but I just tested with only 1 monitor and the game still doesn't pause when I open steam overlay.

It's called Window Borderless in the graphic option. Maybe your steam overlay settings is set to pause when it opens?

I don't know of any Steam setting that automatically pauses the game you're playing when you open the overlay.
