and.......same issue. After another 3-4 hours of game time (broken up in different sessions, not 3 hrs straight) we started running into the same issue again. We get maybe 5-15 minutes into a session and then the dreaded "The Server has closed the connection" error pops up on her end.
Tried several fixes, thought I had it for a moment after changing some setting in my router. Managed to play all day yesterday and most of the day today before the issues started happening again. Starting to think it's just a bug with the game at this point. Haven't sent in a support ticket yet. Think I will just to raise awareness.
The one good thing is if you are NOT the one hosting, you shouldn't lose any items and can return to game back in your cabin. It has happened to me a few times when my friend comes over and I joined her farm. Then it happened to her a few times when I hosted.
Its only the farm hand that gets disconnected, as the host can continue to play for a while without internet connection.
so if this happens, check your wifi speed and wait a few minutes to reconnect.
This is a very good point, and I'm not ruling it out completely personally, but I'm finding it unlikely in my case. I've tore through router settings and even went as far as setting up a dedicated SSID/network that just has my wife and I's computer on it and the issue still comes up. Granted, I haven't tried a LAN connection yet, but I don't have any cables here at the house.
It's a very sporadic issue. We're able to sometimes play for an hour or two at a time with no issues, take a break, then come back and still have no further issues. Other times, like today for example, we played for most of the day, stopped for a little bit, then came back and had issues. This last time I watched my network speed as well as incoming/outgoing and nothing stood out that would make me think the WiFi is the issue. Perhaps I'll do a clean boot and rule out some other services tomorrow and report back.
We are 4 Players (great game fo a family): My wife and me connected via cable (ethernet), my two kids via wifi, me hosting the game. My wife is the only one losing connection, but on a quite regular basis. We just played a 1 hour mini-round and her PC disconnected about 4 times. 3 of the times she also had to start the game new to be able to reconnect.
Only thing that came to my mind is the fact that she is the 4th player in the game.
But I will have a look at the "to-much-in-game-distance" theory mentioned above, as well.
Since the kids never lost connection in about 10 hours total MP playtime, I would rule out router-issues.
Would be nice to get this fixed, since she is quite frustrated about this :-/
All signs as it stands points to it being an issue with Stardew Valley itself, specifically after the latest update. You can try your luck at filing a bug report through their support email listed on their website which I what I did. No response as of yet. Could also try posting to their forums to raise further awareness.
I will say though that LAN connection seems to be working just fine, though we only have 2 players going at a time.
I will say it's random in terms of how often it produces. For us, we could play all day long and not have an issue, and then the next day my wife is disconnecting 5+ times as well.
Can you perhaps try hosting a LAN game with just you and your wife and see what happens? Part of me wonders if there's some sort of issue with the netcode when it's connecting through the internet and not showing up via LAN. Like I said above, we just played for an hour through LAN and didn't have a single issue.
