Roleplay: I am Linus (ideas/discussion thread)
I was doing a challenge to sleep past year 1 and begin game play on year 2. I was watching the TV for recipes, though.

Then Marnie showed up and gave me a cat. So I had to get out of bed each day just to water the cat bowl.

Then I thought, heck, the world is full of forage just sitting there, gonna go to waste if I don't pick it. I should do that. Not plant any crops, but just pick forage and store it in a chest to see how much I get.

Then I was walking past people and thought how rude it would be not to just say hi.

Then I realized: I AM LINUS!

So I got curious. If all I did was gather weeds and forage, how much would that be worth in a year, if I never planted anything? Who could become a really good friend if I gifted them certain types of forage? Would anyone else be my friend after a year of only saying hi to them? What about garbage cans? How much could a year's worth of garbage add up to?

What about if I planted some seeds, but never watered, and only allowed rain to water my crops? If I'm Linus then I'm not a farmer, but surely I do believe in the power of natural rain. It would be a shame to let that power go to waste. What could I grow? What would it be worth? Would it make good gifts?

Then I wondered about fishing. Linus does fish, and sometimes sends you fish in the mail, and has the recipe for wild bait. What if I might fish, but only if I used wild bait (or the original bamboo pole)?

Then I wondered about mining. Linus has no need for rocks or gems, and I can't see him wanting to fight mobs. But he does find you in the mines if you pass out, so he definitely goes there.... Probably to forage mushrooms! So then I had a reason to mine, and figured Linus could just hold any gems/ores he found in a chest for a year until they were needed. He could also gift people with some of the gems. But his real reason for going there is to look for the Mushroom Floors.

I figured this playthrough would be best on the Beach farm, which gives the most interesting variety of foragables and loot crates. The intention is to do one year as Linus, just to see what you collect.
*You would try to fill Help Wanted requests, if you could.
*You would try to befriend people, if they didn't hate the stuff you had to offer.
*You would stay broke pretty much all the time, and put valuable things away into a chest and not sell them at all the first year.
*If you do get any seeds you could plant them but you wouldn't ever water them.

What would live? What skills would you raise? Who would love you?

After your year of hermitage, you could change your play style if you want, and continue as a regular player. Maybe by then, Linus could feel safe to come out of his shell?

I'm having a good time so far! Roleplay or challenge runs are pretty much all I do anymore, since I've beat the game every other natural way there is.

I modified one of my rules slightly. I am allowed to sell things for money if there's an item I believe Linus would actually care to own. That includes a backpack, and an upgraded fishing rod. Not sure if any other items will feel irresistible, as he's pretty minimalist. But I can see those things fitting into a tent.

And I've arbitrarily decided that Linus would never own animals EXCEPT for pigs! So someday if I have the cash to leapfrog a barn up to Deluxe, and stock it with pigs, I'll do that. My logic is that pigs are foragers, so he doesn't feel like he's "keeping" them, so much as befriending them.

And I'm doing the exact opposite: married 17 spouses in one year, 11 divorces and 9 kids. How rich can I get??? $80,000,000. so far.
Maybe I'm Linus's twin who DIDN'T give up his inheritance and is spoiled rich kid.
(sorry, spoiler there, Linus used to be rich and gave up is wealth. He told me that himself.)

LOL! That's hilarious!

I'm thinking Linus will choose Krobus as his roommate, because he's a hermit also, and has no romantic interest.

I'm on day 4 of the playthrough now. I've got my backpack and fiberglass rod. I've decided Linus can use bait that he fishes up, but won't buy any bait. The only bait he will ever craft would be the Wild Bait. Same for tackle. He'll buy the iridium rod someday just so he can use any tackle he fishes up, but he won't buy or craft tackle.

I'm going to fish hard every rainy day, for catfish, because catfish is a loved gift for Willy. Linus isn't into selling the fish, but he cares a lot about giving gifts.

If you try to give a field snack to Linus, his dialogue says he thinks it's offensive trash. I guess that means he would not craft/eat them?

That's pretty rough, given his limited options.

I guess he could eat raw fish. I'll pick up recipes for sushi or maki roll when I can, and I'll craft a cookout kit as early as I'm able. That seems more "Linus" than an upgraded house.

I invited Krobus to live with me and he moved in even though I had 7 wives at the time, and it says he will only be your roommate if you are not married.
But when he started going around the house and kissing all my wives, i kicked him out. I was kind of creepy having him in the bed with us too.

How much of that is true? Even with a mod? Forgive me, i'm not always quick to pick up on when someone is joking.

Day 5 as Linus: I fixed the beach bridge, to get those foragables by the tide pools.
Got the cut scene for the CC. Not sure how much Linus can do for those bundles, but he would try. He would definitely not be a Joja man.

Have saved one of each type of foragable to turn in to CC for seed reward. Will plant those tomorrow after Wizard's cut scene. Luckily crows never eat wild forage, so they can be planted outside the range of the scarecrow.

Fished a little in the morning, then cashed in all fish to buy parsnip seeds and just one green bean plant and one potato, which had not yet shown up from mixed seeds. It's gonna rain tomorrow and I have to get as many seeds as possible in the ground! Parsnips harvested will not be sold, but will make nice gifts for people, as well as trying to fill CC bundles.

in general I won't water, but I decided it was okay to water the first week just to get the scarecrow ASAP. Cannot risk crows! Also, will water at the end of the month only on specific plants if they have not yet had enough rain to mature. Will not water daily. Should have enough rain left in spring to mature all the parsnips planted today, and probably get at least one green bean, and it's not impossible it could grow the cauliflower for me too.

Parsnips are a favorite of Pam, so she'll be getting priority for them every week!

Kinda wondering if I should put some tulips in the ground, as special gifts for Evelyn, who loves them. Probably should.

Not joking, all of it is true. I wanted to see what would happen, and that's what really happened. Been having lots of fun with the Multiple spouses mod.

I did not think Krobus ever kissed anybody. That's so weird!

Linus might be roommates with the lil' guy, but no smoochies for slimy monster!

It is Saturday, Day 6 of I am Linus, and it is raining. I'm fishing like crazy to get money to put as many parsnips in the ground as I can, because I'm confident they will grow with the remaining rainfall in spring. It'll be nice to raise farming xp without worrying about water.

I expect with these parsnips I will get farming level III, which means I could create a bee house and craft speed-gro. Speed-Gro will help a lot, to make things mature in time for rain to grow them. Bees are free agents that only live with a beekeeper out of choice, so I can see Linus keeping them.

Honey is very good, because it is liked by all but 2 people in town, and mead is a loved gift for Willy.
Snowy Sprout Nov 6, 2021 @ 9:52pm
I'm thinking about why Linus would want to raise his farming skill. He doesn't want to keep most animals at all, so the whole animals side of professions is out. He doesn't care about money, so the Artisan profession wouldn't interest him. But if he chose the Agriculturist profession, things would grow faster. That fits in with his vibe of not watering. Things have more chance to mature with natural rain if they grow faster. So that's his route. It's a way for him to successfully produce more in his limited time.

Aside from that end goal, he would not care about mayo machines or cheese machines, but would like to learn to use Preserve Jars, and Kegs, and the Oil Machine. I can see him peacefully brewing beer or tea or coffee or mead, mostly for gifts. The oil machine increases the number of things he can cook. The Preserve Jars will help him complete the Community Center, and the Theater, and also make good gifts. it's a way to increase the appreciation for what he can create, with his limited offerings.
Queen Droxxanna Nov 6, 2021 @ 11:13pm
LINUS would certainly use preserve jars to save up his foraging products to get him thru a cold winter. I know he likes pickles.
And tea to warm him up on cold nights.
But I can't see him making wine ---- thats a rich person hobby and he gave that all up when he came to the valley.
Snowy Sprout Nov 7, 2021 @ 12:31am
I disagree that making wine is a rich person's hobby. BUYING wine is a rich person's hobby. MAKING wine is something my poorest friends have been known to do. It's a natural process that just takes time, after all. Fermentation is almost a type of foraging. Wild yeasts transform one thing into another, and it's rather magical. I think he'd get a kick out of it.

It seems he enjoys all artisan goods equally, as they are universal likes and he is not listed as having any preference or aversion to any.

Even so, I normally do not make wine unless it's ancient fruit or starfruit, both of which he's unlikely to grow much. He wouldn't want to water them. However, if he gets a sprinkler as a reward or a treasure, I suppose he could use those to grow a few of such special crops.

I've decided not to allow him to craft sprinklers, or buy them from Krobus, because that would change the flavor of his farming. I need him to be very tied to the rain cycle, and not become a mega-farmer.

Beer will be a big thing for him, though. Wheat is very cheap, and only takes four days to mature, and grows through two seasons. Most villagers like beer, except the kids, and Penny (because she hates that her mother drinks), and Sebastian (who hates all artisan goods).

All I know about Sebastian is that he's emo and likes computers, games, and motorcycles. Why, do you think, would he hate artisan goods? I don't see the connection.
