Why does stardrop in secret woods not working

Me and my friend gave the sweet gem berry to the statue in the secret woods his eyes turned red he had to go back in twice to get it i cant give it to him

When one player does the event, the other players only have to show up to the statue and interact with it. They don't need to be holding a sweet gem berry to get the stardrop.
