shift tab issue?
Is it possible somehow a setting changed for me? Is it possible a recent patch (last one) changed something?

I used to shift-tab a lot when playing with GF in order to look up stuff while still in game and now if I try to do a shift-tab it changes my bar and I have to alt-tab instead and completely exit the game. I know the shift key is working because I'm using it while typing.

havnt maybe changed the check on the VR Mode active thing for steam overlay? the last big steam update set all games to VR Mode Steam overlay by default, because some braindeath at the steam team thought maybe that was a great idea with so much VR users....
however some ppl got problems with this VR overlay mode on in some games.

I don't know if all PCs have something similar, but I just use the Windows key next to my space bar. It opens the bar at the bottom of my home screen and opens the start menu so I can keep the game running while playing.

Shift+Tab has always opened the Steam overlay for me, so in theory it should still do that...

it's because the leftshift button is used to run (even if you have it on auto) and tab to randomize your toolbar...It's till doesn't work...I think that's a bug. Honestly, i don't open my game from steam since I have an shorcut on my desktop bar.

I may know what the problem is but first you will have to check something. Go ingame to the options menu and scroll all the way down to the keybinding section. Look up the "Shift toolbar" bind and see if it is Tab by chance. If it is then change it to something else.

What this option does is it toggles the next row of your inventory bag and every time you press the button it changes your toolbar to what is under/above it (not sure which direction but it doesnt matter). I believe that is the problem you experience when you want to open the steam overlay. That said I changed my shortcut for steam overlay to Left control + Tab because it gets less in the way when I play some games compared to Left shift + Tab. Left shift is usually sprinting in some games and I got sick of it getting out of the sprinting animation just because I wanted to open the overlay. Got annoying real quick >_>

Im suprised how after many responses to your question nobody was knowledgable enough about this game to not immediately reply with this, to put it nicely...

This didn't seem to help if it's the option I think you're talking about when I right clicked the game and opened up properties.

Both of these didn't seem to help. I changed run to \ and toolbar change to . and it still ignores my shift-tab in order to bring up the overlay but the over lay seems to be working in other games fine.

Thanks everyone, I try some more tests to see if I can figure it out cause my gf plays exclusively with a controller and I'm the only one with a keyboard close.

Extra testing completed after just a few minutes.

Shift-tab for overlay works perfectly in all other games.

Shift-tab works fine it seems on the main menu of Stardew Valley.

Shift-tab sometimes works in the actual game after it changes the toolbar to next but not always. It doesn't matter which shift I use it's just a random thing where it seems to work about 10% of the time.

There seems to be something going on where it's not always bothering to do the overlay even though it is always doing what it's supposed to in game.

Also, I don't know why it would be a factor but I feel 1.4.3 might be a contributor cause my gf and I play this pretty much every weekend and this just seemed to have started in the last few days. Small chance 1.4.2 may have caused it but I'm pretty sure I've used the over lay since that one was pushed out and I know it's worked since 1.4. came out cause when it first came out and we were playing I was looking up a lot while we played due to the rice and such.

Maybe its a MP issue? Can you try to verify cache for stardew valley? Its a small game in term of size so it should finish quickly. If you dont know how just google "how to verify cache steam game" or something like that.

You can also try to use a 2nd playthrough but solo, not MP. Start a new game and play a bit, then do the same testing what you did before. That way you can rule out wether its an issue caused by the patch for the whole game or just a MP issue.

Did some further testing. It seems if I hold the shift too long before trying to hit the tab it gets locked in being attached to some other function. I'm successfully getting it to be reliable to use now as long as I do it quicker.

Same effect in both single and multiplayer.

At least you learned something about it now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
