How to improve relations with NPC's?
When ever i talk to npc's it's pointless banter, usually 1 or 2 pointless sentences and then they wont talk any further. There is no direct interaction of talking with them so how to improve relations with NPC's?

you can gift them items. each npc has items they like love neutral dislike and hate. it's up to you to find out what npc likes what.

To add to above reply you need to figure out what they like/love because if you give them one of those items (especially love) it gives a massive boost to your relationship with them on their birthday. So experiment! Some things will be straightforward (who doesnt like pizza or ice cream irl?) and others are very specific to certain NPC's.

Also, that seemingly pointless talking does help improve your relationships, just only a tiny bit (when you open the inventory window, check the tabs at the top--the one with the heart image will show you how many hearts (basically relationship points) you have with each person. I also know that previously the hearts you have with each NPC decreases each day you do not speak with them; I don't know if that has been changed recently or not (although there is a mod that stops the degradation as well).

So keep chatting, and, as the others said, start gifting. You can give two gifts per week to each NPC, as well as one on their birthday.

I don't know the exact point values, but let's say each heart is 200 points.

Talking to them every day is +20 points. Not talking to them for 1 day is -2 points. So as long as you talk to everyone once every season, your points really shouldn't go down.

A liked gift (again, guessing, rough math) is 40 points. A loved gift is 80 points. A birthday gift is triple, so a loved birthday gift would be 240 points, or a guaranteed 1 heart, plus another 20 points from talking to them.

It hasn't changed as far as I'm aware. It'll decrease by 2 friendship points per day, unless you reached the friendship cap (except for your spouse, decay is forever as long as you're married and it's -20 points per day IIRC).

Talking to a NPC is worth 20 points, gifting depends on the gift, its quality and when it is given (birthday gift is worth 8 times more points and secret santa gift is worth 5 times more points). With a good enough gift on their birthday you can easily get three hearts at once.

Then some festivals also give points, like the Luau (for everyone) or the Flower Dance (with the NPC you dance with). Plus now you can talk to them and it increases your friendship like any other day since the 1.4, they're all gathered in the same place for an unlimited amount of time so it's easy friendship points.

Edit: The actual numbers can be found here : https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Friendship

I think it isn't true anymore since the 1.4.

I get very bored doing the small talk with NPCs. I've found that as long as you give them gifts on their birthday you do fine. Coffee and sashimi are good all rounder gifts as well.

Erhm... Nobody forces you to do it you know, you can also progress in the game without constantly talking to them... Just talk to them whenever you feel like for those friendship points... Sometimes when you reach a certain threshold they start to say other things next to the generic responses. And if it feels like a big chore to talk to them, at least get the calendar in your house so you will know quickly when it is someone's birthday and gift them something they at least like, best love. But thats not what the game is specifically about, you dont have to socialize necessarily. It offers other things as well....

yeah that's what I've been trying to figure out what the other things are in the game to actually do and what the reward would be for doing them.

Thanks all for the replies.

Well the "main goal/story" of this game is to make it to the end of year 3 and then you will get "judged" by your grandpa's ghost for your performance. In this case you should "strive" for getting the max performance possible, if you choose to even care about this at all. But again the choise is yours, you dont HAVE to care about it. Its for people who want a goal to accomplish in the game that they play.

That said you can try to make your own challenges, sometimes people will do a "no farming" playthrough or whatever else you can come up with yourself.

And about the part where you mentioned reward... Well the "reward" with every game when you play it is it should entertain you. If it succeeds in it then that is your "reward". Why are we playing games anyway? I do it because its fun so, there's that. Take a look at Civilization 5, when you play a match and at the end you win/lose, what do you get as "reward"? Absolutely nothing, you dont unlock anything meaningfull (achivements dont count, they are insignificant and add nothing to gameplay). So then why do so many ppl, including myself, like to play a match of civ 5 every once in a while? Cuz its fun.
