He starts using Joja influence to cause problems - I.E you wake up one morning and the path leading into town is now full of Joja construction crew who block your path for a whole week while they do some irrelevant tasks as highlighted in some document Joja procured, so you end up having to take another way into town for that week.
Maybe there's a small chance Joja will send goons to trample a crop or two at night too. He could even bribe or coerce NPCs in the town to halt services or raise prices against you for a short while if they don't like you yet, stuff like that. You walk into Marnies shop one morning and Morris is there, you overhear him mention back when you worked for Joja you got multiple citations for hurting animals or something, and (if she has low hearts) she gets offended and refuses to talk to you for a few days. Stuff like that.
All random crisis events and such that happen until you pay off the debt and finally push Morris out of the picture. The game is a little stale in terms of variety with how each playthrough goes down with events and things happening on specific days and such, it'd just be interesting to have an antagonist that is trying to make life difficult for you potentially switching things up.
Would also be great if the town had regular meetings discussing this which you can attend. Some people might get annoyed with YOU and this feud with Joja because it's messing with the town / them because Joja keeps making life difficult for you "legally" but its also effecting other people too. Not saying I want them to vote you out of the town or anything though. I could see someone like Shane or Haley initially taking Joja's side and stuff until you made friends with them etc.
I don't want the debt to be an overhanging "Pay me or game over!!!" situation, I just want it to be that while your debt is unpaid and active, Morris and Joja will randomly mess with you from time to time - while also giving you something to spend your money on.
I feel like Morris is an underused character and his smarmy moustache twisting evilness could be put to great use, especially to highlight how awful Joja corp is.
Make the relationship become much more than just some daily dialogue and a stardrop once happiness gets high enough.
Spouses need more, agreed.
we need to be able to automate things
Problem with that though is if you delay doing either of that until you've got millions in the bank, you could just pay off the debt right off the bat and skip the entire thing, unless it forces you to pay in instalments or something?
I also would like to see Emily and Haley's parents come home from wherever they are, and other stuff like that. More NPCs are always good in my book. I know it's a small community but the town seems a little lifeless at times.
Random events with NPCs would be nice as well. Like Jodi, Kent and Sam deciding to go on holiday for a week. I love random events and stuff, they make games feel very different each time you play through them, so anything like that would be a big boost in my opinion.
We have random events already like the fairy, the witch, the owl statue etc. I just need more! More!
I also want there to be an option to be antisocial if you so choose. If you simply focus on your farm and don't interact with the villagers, they should grow distant and stuff. You don't visit town festivals, you don't speak to anyone (you haven't even completed the introductions quest in Year 2, what the hell?!) and then you might see events where the towners are talking about you or something. Maybe have them actually show up to your farm to try and playfully "force" you to attend a festival. Walk into the Saloon on Year 3 after having never really socialised with anyone and Gus says "Is that Farmer_Player? Whoa!" and stuff. I dunno.
You could even throw in an event where you wake up one morning and Jas and Vincent, or Abigail, is mucking about on your farm, exploring or playing. You'd have the option to straight up ignore them (antisocial farmer) or antagonise and tell them to get off your land (classic farmer) or even join in (shy farmer) or I dunno. Would effect relationship levels and overall "town opinion" of you.
It would also be nice if you had a "fame" or "renown" level that boosted interactions with villagers as well. As you complete achievements, earn and spend more money, raise your stats, flesh out your collection guide, just generally doing well, and how much money your farm is worth based on its assets and such, and of course the Community Center and other major storyline events. Renown itself would boost interactions with villagers and if you were single, might even cause you to become desirable to them too instead of it being a one-way thing. Might come across as gold-diggery I guess, but it would be great if when you become wealthy and renowned that villagers went out of their way to try and woo you too, lol.
Crisis events sound like an interesting idea at the very least. I'd have pictured it more like how it works in Recettear, that overhanging debt you said you didn't like. For my part, I don't fancy them stepping on my crops and cause you can't prevent or prepare for it so I think it'd just feel annoying and unfair, but a more involved antagonist (or, rather, an antagonist at all) who messes with you in some other ways could be interesting.
And what if the NPCs helped you? Pierre is one of the more controversial NPCs right now, but what if he emphatised with you? What if he helped you, say giving some seeds for free to compensate for the debt payments and it felt more like you beat JoJa together? That'd make him cooler wouldn't it? Pierre is the one that should be most involved in this, but the other villagers lending their assistance would also make the town feel more like a community, and less like you pulled everyone's weight and restored the COMMUNITY Center without involving the community at all. After all, they'd be helping you stay afloat.
Random events wouldn't go amiss, especially if they show more interaction between the NPCs themselves. The town feels lifeless to me after you max out hearts with everyone so there's no reason to talk to them anymore and you might as well ascend from your loser socially active farmer existence and become Linus 2. I think the relationship mechanics as a whole are pretty shallow and could be improved. Also, kids! Won't anyone think of the children? The useless, mute, eternally toddler-aged children?
This.
Additionally, a further use for metal bars and ore, preferably something consumable. Fishing bait and tackle is a good example, or even explosive ammo. Like many players, I'm at that point where I have over 500 iron ore just sitting in a chest, because I have more than I can ever use.
Maybe a new equipment type, like a lucky charm? With some items acting like food, in that it's a one time use, but its effect lasts until the day's end. Like rabbit's foot giving +1 luck for the day, a duck feather giving +10 friendship points for everyone you talk to that day, etc. I'm not sure what kind of charms you'd make with metal, but a new metal sink would be great.
I hope there is a new types of house CONFIGURATIONS in Robin's where the kitchen might be on the right and bedroom on top and nursery in bottom left and that stuff!
