Should I use Stardew Valley Expanded?
I have not yet played Stardew Valley. I only intend on playing it one time, that's it. I was waiting until 1.5 came out. Now that it has, I'm going to start a game up. Should I use the SVE mod considering I will only play this game through once?

It requires 2-3 playthroughs. They don't take too long.

The real question is - what about the mod appeals to you? Do you understand the core game and have played it? Do you understand the mod, the thinking of the mod team, and agree with their design choices? If yes, then use it. If not, wait until you have "yes" to those questions.

I use a LOT of mods. Tractor, Multiple Spouses, Automate - those three make up the core of my gameplay these days. I haven't used SVE, but that's because I am unsure if it would enrich my game or not. I also haven't really checked it out. I know that it's a big project with a lot of content, and I am always afraid of "Just Too Much" syndrome.

Does it matter what's really canon or not? It's not like I plan on attending any Stardew Valley conventions or anything. Plus, people seem to have a lot of great things to say about Extended. Since I'm only playing once, if I don't play Extended now, I won't at all.

You think you are only playing it once... but SDV is one of those games that merit multiple play throughs, and it gets addictive.
You might be right. Maybe I will play it multiple times, but knowing how I play games, it's very very unlikely. I just prefer to move onto something new upon completion. I have so many games in backlog I want to play and not even close to enough time to play them all. I'm trying to get a new restaurant off the ground and it takes up most of my time so I want to make sure the one playthrough I can make time for has it all. Extended looks interesting and I like how it's developer describes it. I fear if I don't play it now, I'll never get to play it.

That makes sense then... I have a huge back log myself, many games sitting on my Steam that I haven't even downloaded yet. :/

If you're going to go ahead and play SDV with the SDV Expanded mod, I recommend you should also look into the Ridgeside Village mod, and East Scarpe. I believe those two mods also flesh out the game.

PS. good luck with your restaurant!

Stardew Valley Expanded has some good stuff but I think it overall suffers from size more then anything. Everything is much, much bigger but a lot of that space isn't really doing anything other then being *more space*. There's new areas but again, aside from being huge there's nothing really going on with them. The extra woods area in particular is gigantic and can take hours in game to get through. I'm sure events happen in there but for a year in game I never saw much of anything. The areas past Clint's blacksmith are a great addition in theory and lore but aside from some new planting area it's pointless. The area above the spa adds more foraging but again, not too much happens there. The same can be said for the new farm, it's gigantic but unless you have a really great plan for all that space it just ends up being empty space. It takes forever to get from one side of your farm to the other. And clearing everything out was ten times the effort a farm in the regular game takes. The new NPC's are hit and miss, I found the new bachelorette to be kinda...mai waifuish. She's into cosplay, manga, anime, has pink hair, etc, etc. Like the dev set out to appeal to that specific archetype rather then feeling like a real character. She has good events though I'll admit.

But there's things I adore like the added shortcuts so you can easily travel through to parts of the world. I wish Concerned Ape would add those. And if you use one mod you can use others like the NPC Locations and minimap mod. Those are amazing, no more guessing where the hell a NPC is on their birthday or for a quest.

If you're going all in on modding you might as well put NPC map locations in the table. I have been convinced that it's not necessarily a good idea for new players since it takes away part of the game's mystery, as it were, but I wouldn't be starting with SVE either so make your own decisions.
God the SVE farm map is so big, I can't describe it without repeating "gigantic" or adding an expletive. I'm thinking of playing with that mod again, but maybe I'll stick to the normal maps. Perhaps the OP should consider keeping this bit vanilla haha.
