Speaking of item spawner, the same rule applies for town/NPC requests on the notice board - like Willy asking for 3 anchovies (or similar), you must catch them not spawn them.
Although, there do seem to be some exceptions - so far IME every request for crafting/building materials (clay, stone, wood, hardwood etc) can be completed using item spawner. Clothing/cooking requests at time of posting are a mixed bag, some work with item spawner, others you will need to craft/cook manually.
Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you be able to get the new fish by the end of year 2? Unless you're like days away, and can't get enough golden walnuts to open the pirate cove, it should be very possible to do (in fact I've done it).
Thanks for the answers btw everybody, I found out myself that I will need those fish since their sillouhettes appear in the collection menu.
