I'm also annoyed by this problem. I only own 1 chicken, so I can't finish Gus's Famous Omelette because I can't possibly harvest 24 eggs in 12 days. I have many eggs. I should be able to just deliver them. I'd prefer items to have a spoil timer than to have to put up with this telepathic NPC nonsense where they can tell how new the materials are.
Same with the mine requests, you actually have to mine them yourself during the quest, like Get me 20 copper ores, you have to mine them during those 2 days.
And again with fishing quests, get 5 anchovies, get them in 2 days and deliver and you're fine.
That way you only have to actually go into the shop for it once.
That goes for everything you have to put in boxes instead of giving it to the npc personally.
And if you can't harvest enough you can get the delivered stuff back later from the box in Lewises house.
Worked fine for the hardwood for me, not sure how I did Pierre's quest.
