Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley

Can someone explain to me why is this game so great?
I have the game on ps4 and I played a few hours a while back. For some reason I found it boring, but I keep seeing praise everywhere and I wonder if i am missing something. Are mods necessary to make the game better? Im contemplating buying the pc version to see if I get into it

If you find the concept boring this type of game simply isnt for you.
Day 5 is when things get more interesting (unless it rains that day, then it's day 6) did you land it that far?
One of many reasons why I love this game so much is the fact that it doesn't have the soul-crushing, mindless grind that so many other games with progression have (looking at you, Minecraft), especially if you also use Automate, which is a mod that does away with this game's grindiest and my least favorite elements: refilling and collecting stuff from stations.

In other words, when you're putting in work into your farm, it doesn't feel like you're wasting your time with meaningless, boring activity simply so that "it gets better later" or anything of this sort. The game is fun at every stage, from starting out and doing heavy planning to becoming a millionaire and kicking back. If I absolutely had to pick one game that is my all-time favorite, it would have to be Stardew Valley, because I simply can't think of any other game that does progression so darn well.

And don't forget mods. Automate is hands down the biggest game-changer, but there are many more that improve the game substantially, such as Lookup Anything, UI Info Suite, Angel's Weapon Rebalance and so on. There's also the DLC-sized mod Stardew Valley Expanded, but it's personally not my cup of tea, plus it's not fully compatible with some of the mods that I use.

Well I love Story of Seasons and Rune Factory. But I still found it hard to get into the game at first and now I love it! Do you have someone to play it with? Because playing it with friends made me fall in love with the game. Its so much more fun with friends!

If you are not into slow-paced games, this one is probably not for you. I also enjoy trying to get all the achievements. Hope this helps a bit. Have a good day :)
The thing about this game, and games like it, is that you get out of it what you want. I play for a mix of progression and seeing how fast I can get money rolling, and just to relax. Some people play it like a dating sim, farming only enough for gifts for people. If you don't find something that holds you in the first month of the game (28 in-game days), you're not likely to imo.

I think the big thing for some people at least is nostalgia. The game brings us back to the good old days of early Harvest Moon games, and somewhat Rune Factory games. Back when things were simpler, and games were complete.

EDIT: As for mods, I've played many a different farm without mods, and it's just fine without them. Some people like some mods to remove some of the slightly more tedious aspects of the games, such as with Automate for tossing stuff into furnaces for you or whatever, and other such things, but I think the game is perfectly fine without such mods. I have taken to using a couple of informational mods, especially UI Info Suite, that just gives me a bit more info at my fingertips, but it's not necessary either. In the end it's a single player game (unless you play with other people), so you can do what you want, and that's okay. Enjoy the game, or play something else that you enjoy /shrug

Do you like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, or any games like those? If not then you probably won't like this.
I enjoy the relaxing nature of this game (except for the mines lol)
I started with Graveyard keeper and it led me to SV.. and after some experience with it... ye, look at me, it is 2021 I have some 25 years gaming experience and having soem 600 hours in pixel game that became one of my all time favorites.

It is chill experience thats it - but it catched me on more fronts. The whole narrative suits me (that young guy working in office went to small town following some different way of life), I like the NPC community that is there (even though sometime naive to childish, but still cute and enjoayable), I like the complexity of game and the loop - I am information sponge and somehow fell in love to having 20 wiki windows open with characters routines, gift system, fish system,.. what will happen or become available when, what to do with that, related planning of things to days or weeks advance., I like profit and see how my farm, money or relation progress. i like topen online calculator and turn my plans into numbers and pure profit or build optimal layouts for crop or farm itself...

I like the variety of things you can do, explore and how it go more and more into depth (and it is only depending on you if you make things chore or not..)

So ye.. lot of reasons, but at end it is just chill. Playing with friends add some new dimension too.

Btw basic game has already tons of content and is very solid - really no mods are needed at all. I would suggest those only if you explored base content already.

But after all - ye, as said - it may happen the game is simply not for you.
It might just not be your cup of tea.

People enjoy many things about this game, most notably the quiet small town atmosphere and aesthetics, and having so many different things to spend your time on that you feel you never have enough time to do it all.

If you don't like those things you won't enjoy this game. It doesn't say anything about the game, it's just that your personal preferences are different.

I'm sure there are "good" sports or racing games out there, but as I'm not interested in sports or cars, they're all trash to me.
Personally I've enjoyed some older HM titles more. When coming from HM it can feel great at first, because it does some things better at the start, but ultimately imo it lacks gameplay. Sprinklers are easy to get and completely void having to water even. Greenhouse makes sense less important. Crops are largely just reskins with different money values attached. There aren't interesting watering mechanics like the trenches in Tale of Two Towns, harvesting doesn't feel like a great act as you're just running over the field, holding A and sucking up all the crops, etc.
Sadly even modern HM titles streamline things more and get rid of gameplay because they fear of inconveniencing the player.

I do enjoy it more with some mods though, makes the town feel alive at least. And while not really hard, makes it takes a bit longer to get everything (which ultimately, as with any game, leads to boredom).

Interesting, I find the tedium of e.g. the HM SNES game to be actually the main thing that carries it. Makes it feel like you're actually doing something for the reward you get, rather than it just being sprinkled on you for no reason in particular.
Same with Minecraft, it can be a bit of a pain having to mine all the materials to build something, but ultimately it feels more rewarding than just creative-modeing them I find.
But guess different strokes for different people.
