This is the dialogue in the aforementioned heart event, btw. From the wiki:
Abigail: "Stop telling me how to live my life!"
Caroline: "Hey, cut it out! We're letting you live here free of charge until you finish school. It seems like you don't appreciate that at all!"
Abigail: "Stop trying to make me feel guilty. I appreciate that you and Dad are helping me out, but expecting me to dress the way you want is ridiculous. I'm not a little girl anymore, Mom."
Caroline: (pause) "...You're right. I'm sorry."
I was going to say that one could generously interpret "school" to mean higher education, but Abigail is just written like a high school student. I guess she's not necessarily the sharpest tool in the shed.
Some of the other characters (Sam most of all) also feel like they're in high school, but nothing confirms it like that. It's just poor Abigail that's stuck with the smoking gun.
Not that the new farmer looks very adult ... but their backstory at least makes them older.
Come to think of it, it's also kinda interesting that Alex regards the player character as particularly well educated. Could just be that his perspective is imperfect and it's just his impression, but I hadn't thought the player character talked about philosophy all that much. I now choose to believe that they discuss Nietzsche with their animals and crops.
I'd say we know so little about the farmer's backstory that you could make them about as young as anyone short of the children. For all we know they went straight from high school to JoJa, and didn't work there for long. I always assumed the farmer is pretty young.
“My Grandma told me I should spend more time studying. I was like, '...Grams, don't fret. I'm turning pro!'
Studying is for nerds, anyway.”
“My Grandma told me I should spend more time studying. Maybe she's right...”
While it is possible to interpret these as "he's not studying", I feel I should point out how weird the phrasing then becomes. Alex could easily phrase it as "should study", or "should go to college", or something like that, yet he goes out of his way to specify "should spend MORE time studying". Which to me seems like a clear indication that he is studying, or at the very least should be studying, but he should be doing more of it. If it means he's not in a position where he has anything to study, the whole "more" specification kinda falls flat.
Remember that in Sam's 8 heart event you all board the bus to Zuzu City to see his band play, the bus doesn't have to be repaired for that to happen.
For that I always just assumed it was the bus to the desert that didn't work instead of any bus service.
I agree it seems that way, but maybe they are being home schooled/ self taught online lesson/tutorials when they either "sometimes go off grid" (more likely/believable if you are playing mods to be fair) or form a "study group" and play D&D, have band practice or whatever afterwards (the game shows them round the table they use for D&D style game it could just be an oversight that their text books or whatever are not there for a while before the game board appears). I would also add that Abigail at least does use the library - you can find her there sometimes either reading a book or looking around the museum displays and she'll comment about an assignment/homework she's working on or something along those lines. As for Sam, maybe Penny helps him with his studies - she already tutors the younger kids. Sebastian is tricky (Robin mentions they were not around in the valley when farmers grandpa died, yet when they did move to the valley Sebastian was either 2 or 3 years old - and mentions Maru wasn't born yet, so if nothing else we know Sebastian is at least 2 - 3 years older than Maru.) he looks slightly older than most of his friends maybe a year? But mentions he could have gone to higher ed in Zuzu and got accepted onto post-grad job earning big bucks, but he preferred to be freelance/indy.
I don't know where to place Harvey age wise - in many ways he seems more "elderly" or at least suffers from conditions which are thought to be linked with the elderly. (he mentions numerous ailments he has - bad eyesight, being the primary/most often mentioned). Granted he may just have a condition witch affects his eyesight or whatever but he also acts more like a retired or close to retirement kinda guy - solo hobbies/activities unless he goes to the saloon or is attending a town/seasonal event.
How he is still practising as a Doc is troubling (watch his "examinations" of the residents, some residents like Abigail or Maru etc. he will keep them for hours -on the in game clock- while he listens to their chest - Abigail even gets irritated and asks if he's done yet so she can leave. Is his hearing as bad as his eyesight or is he just really creepy? I mean I could understand if it was with Sebastian, dude smokes way too much, or Alex/Pam one is super buff the other is out of shape. All three could have lung/heart issues, so he'd probably be more thorough with their checkups, like he is with Evelyn & George.)
Based on this I could never date/marry Harvey (too questionable), Sam (nice guy but more of a friend), Alex (ditto), Maru (too much hassle - Robin would be a better choice if she ever left Demetrius and i wanted an older partner).
So it falls to the usual suspects to whom i'd marry: Abigail, Penny, Shane, Sebastian.
Although Emily, Haley & Leah are perfectly fine too. If we include mods all this is irrelevant as
I'd marry Riley - best spouse imo
Harvey doesn't look very old to me. Older than the other bachelors, but not old. My interpretation is that he's recently out of med school, probably a little over 30. Questionable depending on how young you think the farmer is, but I wouldn't say he's absolutely too old.
So they are at least midtwenties, probably early thirties, even if they started work early.
