Best way to find a prehistoric level in Skull Cavern?
When I did my dive to level 100 of the skull cavern, I passed through one but didn't take the time to stop and farm a dinosaur egg because I was so focused on getting to level 100 by 2am and just used a staircase on that level. Now I really regret skipping it because a dinosaur egg is one of the last things I need and despite a few more dives into the skull cavern since then, I have yet to find another prehistoric level full of dinosaurs.

Does luck affect the chance to get a prehistoric level? If so, does good luck or bad luck make it more likely to get one? Also, do they happen more often at lower levels, or less often? Is there a minimum level you have to make it to before they start appearing? What can I do to maximize my chances of finding a prehistoric level? And is there a better way of getting a dinosaur egg?

This site tells you when and where each Prehistoric level, Mushroom level and Quarry levels are.

It's not 100% though, what I did was check days with were it could spawn on low number floors and went into the mines and check, pretty sure not even resetting the day re-rolls the chance of the floor being prehistoric.

I think it's like a 1/50 chance to find one? So if you just grind there every day, you should find several per week...

I always got mine from an artifact spot. Hatch the first one or two then bring one to the museum later.

Just spend a lot of time in the skull mines, the predictor isn't much help with this issue.
Or hope to get lucky fishing/ digging

Tbh I never ever check the Predictor for Prehistoric levels so I have no idea how accurate it is for those. The Predictor for the things I have checked regularly has always been 100% but it does say that it's own predictions are not 100% for those levels.

I usually find myself on at least one prehistoric level every single time I go into Skull Caverns though so it should not be hard to find one.

This is a big necro but just wanted to say that I just found out about the predictor site the other day.

First time using it that day was unsuccessful BUT today I used it again and for this particular day, levels 14 and 80 were the most likely levels for me. I made sure that the forecast was very happy spirits, I also made sure to have a stack of 3 spicy eel dishes on me so that my luck was as optimal as I could get it before I took the stairs to level 14 and BOOM, there was the prehistoric floor, on which I was lucky enough to find a dinosaur egg.

Then I just kept going, not really thinking about it anymore since my goal was already achieved (dinosaur egg) but a few hole plummets later, I ended up at another prehistoric level and yep, it was floor 80!

So yeah, the predictor site seems to be the best indicator of the likelihood of which floors will be a prehistoric level and I think maximizing luck also plays a significant role in reaching them. Oh, forgot to mention that I also had the Lucky Ring equipped as well, which increases luck +1.

The problem also with the predictor is that in reality, you might jump down a shaft and miss the predicted floor by 10 levels and have another 30 to go down for the next predicted one.

At this point in my Stardew life I have no issues reaching level 400 deep in a day in Skull Caverns with infinite Triple Shot Espresso, Spicy Eel and Luck forged rings etc. I even made a video where I used Staircases to go down as deep as floor 1000, no idea how many floors there were prehistoric though but I imagine it was quite a few.

Prehistoric as you above mentioned are literally most useful for that one Dino Egg or maybe a Dino Fossil part and you are done with them so finding one of them is irrelevant if you just focus on what is needed to reach deeper levels.

i use the elevator in skull cavern and always carry on where I left off, and currently at level 300. The deeper you go, the more good stuff you get on each level. Past level 200 you get an average of one Prismatic shard on every level, and I see the prehistoric level about every 25-40 levels . Using the tractor in the skull cavern makes it a lot easier. I have been as deep as level 1700 in a previous play through.

Got at least two dino eggs fishing with Pirate before the end of Year 1.

Didn't focus on any particular day, luck level, location... just regular play. I probably had Fishing 10 around the end of Summer. And between Fall and Winter brought up a couple dino eggs.

That dino mayo is some good, slightly disconcerting, stuff.

Sorry for necro, but this is the first time I've ever seen anyone refer to an elevator for the skull cavern. Is this a cheat or mod? Or is there a way to unlock this?
Also, I've done TONS of digging through skull cavern, and have only found ONE prehistoric floor... The dino hunter thing will take me forever at this rate...
For how prehistoric floors spawn, if I do the SAME day over and over, the floor will still spawn on the same one? So I could do the same day over and over again, and never actually find one, if it's super low for that day?

It's a mod.
