why are my chickens sad
Whenever it rains my animals stay inside right? No problem, I've been collecting hay like a madwoman and the little feeder things are full. But it seems like when it rains for a few days in a row they don't eat anything? Always says they're looking thin and unhappy, they don't produce eggs, generally a bad time. Is there something else I'm supposed to do?

Pet them everyday, close coop's doors for the night (when they inside), and let them leave during the day. I did only this + feeding and they all happy and producing highest quality stuff.

There's no need to close the doors, unless you want them to stay in the coop on sunny days. Petting and feeding them will still rise their hearts to the maximum with always open doors eventually.

And also keep in mind to put heaters in the coop in winter, so that they don't get unhappy in that season

"little feeder thing" i guess thats where you error is burried. its not enove to fill your silos, you must bring the hay from "the little feeder thing" to the feeding boards right from it, as long you dont have a coop/barn lvl 3 that does that itself.

Might be a stupid question - are you feeding them?
When you cut grass, hay goes into the silo for storage, and the silo allows you to withdraw it from a bin inside the chicken coop.
You still need to pull the hay out of the bin, and place it on the bench for chickens to eat.
So if you have 3 chickens, you'll withdraw 3 at a time - this way, it's possible to withdraw it all (3, 6, 9, etc. until it's empty) so you can place it in a chest for Winter, and continue cutting grass to build up your reserves.

The 3rd tier of coop comes with an auto-feeder, so you don't need to manually load the feeding shelf every day.

Definitely not a stupid question because i did not know that. I thought the little cupboard full of hay is what they were eating from. Thanks for the info @Stardustfire and @I Kinda Fail !!

And you thought the trough next to it was, what, decoration?
It's an incredibly common mistake... I THINK there's a library book in the game that explains it, but many players don't even realize you can read library books. No need to be rude.

And there's no need for namecalling either.
But it was fine that you were attempting to bully someone else? OP did nothing to deserve it. You did.
