At least, that's my theory.
And the amount of collectables around the cities are limited. It's well balanced around singleplayer, so that you can eat enough to get more things done, but with more players arounds it's not enough anymore at some point.
If you're out of energy and the day is young, go foraging.
And bed regeneration is usually much slower then just going to the spa. I just wish it's also in singleplayer, if I want to do 1-2 things (like watering some plants that are left over).
It makes perfect sense. In single-player the spa's availability doesn't matter, no one uses it and, early on, you can just go to sleep to recover energy and no one is stuck waiting.
Imagine in multiplayer if anyone who's out of energy, without the spa available, was forced to wait until everyone else ran out. It would be horrible. That's why you have the option of laying in bed to recover some energy and then spending that energy. It gives you something to do while other people are doing their things.
There should never be "plants that are left over" unwatered. Watering crops should be a priority and you shoudn't plant more than you have energy to water. There's usually the option of going to collect forage for extra energy, and if you planned everything poorly you can always go buy a bit of food and do the watering, so the punishment isn't that bad.
I realize this additional option would be beneficial, just saying it was added to multiplayer out of necessity in that particular environment, not for game balance.
There is enough stuff you can't really afford to sell if you want to min-max. Salmonberry for example sell for a horrible price compared to how much energy they give.
You would need to sell 4 of them to get one parsnip seed at a win of ~15G.
But if you would eat those 4, you would've enough energy to use your fishing rod more than 10 times, which will already overtake the 15G with the first fish you catch.
Same with gathering and selling Copper or iron ore, if you need fast money, but hate the fish mini game.
And it's similar with the spring onions, which you can find in big number early on.
