The wedding ring only needs to be crafted if your save file is multiplayer. If you've only played single player on that farm, it doesn't need to (and can't) be crafted. But to answer your initial question: Yes, having a friend join your farm briefly would allow you to buy the recipe. It will always appear in the Traveling Cart's inventory (until purchased) in multiplayer. As soaringfreedom suggested, it may even be possible to do so without anyone actually joining in multiplayer, but I'm not certain.
If you haven't yet, I would try uploading your save file here. It can tell you if the game has failed to track something that you've actually done.
