It takes a month to grow a tree, so if you want to harvest fruit from a summer tree, you should plant it during the spring (on the 1st ideally) etc.
Or you can plant them in the greenhouse, once unlocked, to get fruits all year long.
But if you plant a spring tree at the first of spring, well, you'll have to wait the next year to get some fruits.
Depends on how you plan out your farm. If you just place them down and keep their surroundings clear even after they've grown, then it's not worth in terms of money alone.
I didn't test to place objects next to them or even grow crops (and the wiki doesn't say anything about it, i might try it once i get back into the game or someone else might be able to answer this question^^), but if that's possible, then they start to be worth it, as long as you make jelly out of their fruit (preferably pomegrenade or apricot early on or banana later).
They're also 4 times as profitable on the ginger island, so if you want to go ham on it, i would suggest to plant them there, as they will yield fruits all year long. They still can't win against wine production though (unless it's possible to grow crops around them)
And it's also possible to plant fruit trees at the walls around the green house. There's no reason to not plant them, as the area can't be used for any crop anyway. I would just google the ideal fruit tree layout there, if you want to get as many trees into it as possible.
But you can obviously also plant them in areas, which you doesn't plan to build things on anyway like animal areas.
Doesnt matter how you plan it, 18 is the absolute max while not infringing on crop spots.
Mine only has 16, because im lazy and didnt feel like removing 4 I had already done just to get an extra 2 trees. You can easily get 2 of each type of tree, to keep the OCD at bay. 18 just makes a nuisance issue for those of us with OCD.
Also, 18 makes your greenhouse look super cluttered. 16 looks much more presentable.
You're getting advanced, late game advice when I think you're looking for more basic advice.
I find it's a good idea to plant one of each fruit tree. On a wilderness game I have my coop directly left of my home with a secondary growing area below it but with a mill and two fodder stores just above the pond. Fruit trees I plant down the side of the greenhouse and then I wall off beyond the greenhouse for my stable.
Don't both trying to grow fruit Year 1 - unless you know exactly what you're doing and are merciless with pursuing your goal you won't have the money.
However this means that you should be planting your spring trees on the last days of AUTUMN year 1, your summer trees on the last days of winter, and your autumn trees during spring year 2. This means you'll have enough apples for the fodder by Day 3, Autumn year 2. Most people aren't going to get the greenhouse by the end of year 1.
Be careful to note EXACTLY where your fruit trees are so you do't cut them down by mistake.
S.x.
for current meta: no, only plant them inside the greenhouse on the main farm. they struggle to reach the top tier methods.
for personal preference: I love trees. You don't need to water them. they grow all year round, and after 3 years its irridium quality fruit. if you're playing a game where min maxing isn't a thing, fruit tree is the best.
how to fruit tree: plant directly into untilled soil. The tree must be placed into the center of a 3x3 area which is clear of anything, grass, rocks, branches, etc or it will not grow, or not allow you to plant it. you cant move a fruit tree once you've planted it, so dont waste that 4000 gold lol. plant any time. it takes 28 days to start producing fruit, and only produce fruit during 1 season.
@topic: Fruit trees are pretty bad when it comes to number-crunching, especially when planted outside of the greenhouse. It takes a really long time for them to pay back their investment cost, and even then they only provide a pretty low income.
The fruits needed for the bundles can also just be bought on the Traveling Cart, so they're not really necessary for that either.
They do provide quite a bit of atmosphere though.
Oh, except for one thing; every single NPC likes fruit from fruit trees as gifts...
and you get the fruits 28/4 from there.
