170 hours played and this finally dawned on me!
Making bars takes a while and can be distracting. Sometimes i would spend the day in the rain making them or others i would just make them at night before i goto bed, then make a few in the morning. This is kinda slow but works.

I just got the brilliant idea to make them while i go fishing.. What a great way to make. Make the bar, and fish while it finishes. When your done for the day, pack up your smelter and go home.

I'm sure others thought of this, but i just had to chuckle, how did i not think of this before!

Start the furnaces, come back when they are done. Doesn't matter what you do in between.

Oh dear. One of the first things I did when I started smelting on my first playthrough was... Doing something else in the meantime! :brownchicken: Fish, craft, mine... I think I even went over to Marnies once and as usual, she wasn't there!

I usually cook copper bars while I'm harvesting my fish ponds and other daily chores, then put in gold/iron/iridium bars when I leave the farm for the day. Then I do the same thing before bed.

For fishing, usually I have a line of crab pots and recyclers near my fish pond, and keep reloading the recyclers.

I think OP might be saying to carry one or more furnaces with you to remote fishing spots, which I haven't tried myself but I guess should work and is a bit ouf of the ordinary. Having them somewhere on your farm and filling them up and then doing something different on the farm (or anywhere else, really) surely is a common thing to do.

A thing I did only late in was to place chests around places I would navigate around frequently to drop in random stuff I foraged so that I wouldn't bloat up my inventory when my initial goal where the mines or something. At some other time I would grab it back out and take it with me to my farm. You just gotta make sure to put up these things out of the paths of the villagers, obviously.

Seems like a waste, just for some bars.

Yea that is basically what i'm saying, though i guess they are pretty easy to make so you can just leave them, but i like to wander around when i fish and try new spots. Sure i have a few spots that i like to goto. outside haley's house, or near linus, or a place by the ocean.. but still i move around. It's sorta dawned on me, cause i also played Starwars galaxies and that had stuff you carried with you to help you complete tasks. No man's sky is another that you carry things like that to use. No clue why it took me so long to figure out hehe

Leaving chests is also a good thing. Drop one in the mine on the top floor incase you want to do a little cave crawling and have a full inventory. Near crab pots or fishing spots you goto often. I guess you could even leave fishing gear and food in them to make it even easier. I like to travel light and that might help. I think i'll add this to the list of things to do!

i've never considered leaving chest in random places outside the farm...

well im at the point in the game where i have an unlimited amount of resources. If I need something crafted right atm i rather not wait especially if its iridium.

I honestly never thought of carrying a furnace around with me all day while I waste it fishing. I usually plunk one or two down and never move them again.

Me too. But there are many secret and mysterious trends in Stardew Valley. Carrying around a furnace might be a new one. Even Haley might have one in her purse! :brownchicken:

I'm little over 2000 hours in and just started a new farm file, I never thought of this but that makes so much sense. Like some of the other posters the long time bars i set before mining and before bed. Trying to get all the copper smelted for first tool upgrades can be frustrating when it's so short and I want to do something else. I'll start taking them with me while fishing.
As for the chest idea I saw a tip before the first time I played stardew and have since put a chest in the mine so I can dump off when i get full up useful early on when you don't have much inventory space. I also leave one by skull cavern and leave behind my bombs and some food so i don't have to worry about remembering to take them with me.
