Friendship is based on a point scoring mechanism. Each heart represents 250 points.
A liked gift is worth 45 points
A loved gift is worth 80 points
A silver quality is worth 10% more. Gold and iridium are 25% and 50% more.
A birthday gift is worth an additional 8x multiplier, so an iridium loved birthday gift tops out at 960 points.
Talking to a villager is +10 or +20 depending on what he's doing.
NOT talking to a villager is -2, or worse if you're in a relationship, or zero if you're at max hearts.
Bottom line: Every little bit helps, just keep bribing him and those hearts will show up soon enough.
He doesn't give you any points until you translate. You're throwing items into the void.
