The train

Is there any kind of a schedule so we know when the train will be passing through? I usually can't get up there quick enough to get anything.

I'm not getting any trains at all. End of winter, Year 1, and there was just one train during this whole time (sometime in summer). Is it really so rare occurrence?

On random days between 9am and 6pm, a train can pass through the area. If the player is outdoors, a message will pop up saying "A train is passing through Stardew Valley" accompanied by a train whistle sound. https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Railroad

I know that. But I'm spending a lot of time outdoors, yet there was a single train in three seasons (summer-autumn-winter).

you can try using stardew predictor to see if/when a train will pass (follow the wiki link in Shrub's comment, scroll all the way to the bottom, click that link and follow the instructions) unless you consider it cheating or have any problem with predicting pseudorandom events.
