Is there any kind of a schedule so we know when the train will be passing through? I usually can't get up there quick enough to get anything.

As far as I know, there isn't, but from what I've read it isn't worth it.

It rarely drops anything of worth if it drops anything at all. So its pretty pointless to waste the time heading up there.

The train is random but i don't know the number scale. It's not really worth the effort to be honest. Rarely does it drop anything worth being up there for. Most of the time it doesn't even drop anything (for me). Just an easter egg that's fun if you happen to be up there at the time.

The train is random and you only get notified of it passing if you are outside at the time. I only bother with the train if I am nearby but I wont go out of my way to race there on the chance something might drop

It is a random occurance. I had one come by at 1:00pm once, then restarted the day for an unrelated mistake. When I started the day over I figured I'd make my way north, so I'd be near the train at 1:00... it never came...

It's random, but like I'm pretty sure quite a few sources have cited, it has a time span where it may or may not happen.

It's pretty useless. Best loot I've ever gotten was a geode. I chased it maybe 10 times before I gave up. It never gave anything good.

If you make contact with the train, it does some damage; and if you hit it with a weapon that will also do damage to you (it has no effect on the train though -- there's a rumour it will cause more stuff to drop, but there's no train robbery in Stardew Valley it seems.)

Getting stuck between the train and the tunnel will cause you to be knocked unconscious, exactly as if you'd lost all your HP through fighting monsters.
